My sister is staying our place while she sorts out a new place to live, she needs to be on the net to do her work.

She has a laptop and a wireless netgear card she used at her old flat, she wants to use our connection. We have a BT home hub which with wires works fine, but when we put the her wireless card in, it worked but the signal was VERY bad. We weren't all to far away from the box either, i made sure all the settings were good to go for a laptop but no joy.
So how do i know if its this netgear card or the Hub itself??

I know the router is like some cheap Thompson thing with a fancy case, but it really wasn't far from the laptop.

Any ideas guys?

Problems I've had with wireless have been:
Arrow Use the latest firmware in the router
Arrow Change the aerial on the router for a higher gain one
Arrow Move where I use the wireless laptop*

* house is old and has breeze blocks that appear to have a high metalish content that blocks the signal. With router upstairs best signal is (a) in the same room or (b) directly below downstairs.

HTH Thumbs Up

When you have multiple computers using a single router the signal can sometimes overlap if you know what I mean. Automatically they usually set to channel 6. If you go in the router settings and change hers to to 12 or something then it should be ok.

There's only 1 PC connected and that by wire.
Would it still be affected?

no it wouldn't.

BT Home hubs are notorious for being shite. I suggest you get close you it or build one of the various antenna range extenders you find on the internet?

e.g. pringles can

google it

No

FWIW came across this link that covers some of the suggestions already made.
