Looks like Bernie's pushed FOTA to far for the last time!

I personally hope they follow through with this and if/when Bernie backtracks on the budget cap issue they tell him to shove it.

What do you think?

I dislike Bernie intensely.

In my opinion it is he who has pushed F1 down the commercial path so vigorously, and pandered to those with the money so much, that the racing is as dull as it is.

I personally think he now enjoys the power and the money a lot more than the racing. Pretty unsurprising really, since the racing has been rubbish for a long time.

I would welcome a change, the only problem is that I'm no so sure the new championship would provide better racing.

At least it would lack the poison dwarf tho.

I think they still have a mountain to climb to launch their own series and it may be more of a ruse to get the FIA to give in completely. I do hope that they follow through with it though to teach Bernie and Max a lesson! Thumbs Up

I completely agree. He has pretty much ruined F1 over the years. There were some really good tracks on the calendar in the 80's & 90's.

I was a big fan in the 80's & 90's but never watch it any more as the racing and circuits are crap.

I wonder if a new championship would enforce KERS? Obviously the teams will have spent a considerable amount on R&D already.

This would be fantastic. If this goes through, i am sure that they will have enough sense to relax a few stupid rules and put some decent tracks in.

I am watching this closely.
I am actually genuinely happy this has happened. Laughing

*sigh* if they want a budget cap so badly they could do it and make the racing interesting with four easy rules:

1) £100mil/year budget cap

2) no technical restrictions barring some very basic size restrictions.. i.e. vehicle is no longer than 15ft, no wider than 6ft and no taller than 5ft

3) no automated driver control systems

4) Downforce created by the car is limited to 1000kg at full speed (last years f1 cars were around the 1700kg mark)

seriously, no auto boxes, no tcs, no launch control, no abs, no massive aerodynamically derived downforce but in return you can have total freedom on engine type, fuel type, engine size, induction, drivetrain, tyres, wtfever else..

Very Happy

four easy rules, i mean five or six or 15 Laughing Laughing I see what you mean but it would end up with death traps. I hope they (being the manufacturers and all) know what makes good racing and pick out some good ideas.

It will either be a huge success or an epic failure. That is even if it goes ahead.

Hi

One suggestion from a few years ago that made sense was for completely manual gearboxes. Introduces the chance of more missed gear changes.

For real fun, stick them back to using carbs, and watch them try and get traction control to work like that.

All the best

Keith

Personally I would like to see the end of wingd in F1. They are totally unnecessary.

There is no real flow down into roadcars from F1 aero anymore, just don't see the point (other than for advertising space).

Instantly the racing would be closer.

I would have no limits on engine type, just a ban on refuelling and a max tank size of 250litres.

Clearly manual boxes and no traction control, but other than that go ahead.

I can fix that:

Max is part of the foundations of F1, and he should retain that role in 2010.. preferably as part of the foundations for the new Grandstand at Donnington.

Very Happy

So what exactly are the big teams pissed off about thats making them want to quit F1? is it still the spending cap?
If so surely they'd want unlimited spending in the new championship, so wouldn't that just put off any smaller/new teams.

They was going to try a fixed DF limit, but it's almost impossible to police. There is currently no accurate way of testing how much it is producing.
I think you will find as well last years cars were well above what you quoted, being nearer 3000KG.

I am sure there will be an agreement made as they are not stupid but the bigger teams spend hundreds of millions of dollars every year to improve the cars the the spending cap was 20% of some budgets beforehand.

Well, as predicted Bernie has done a u-turn already. He said words to the effect of 'I think the teams shouldn't be subject to a budget cap providing that they sign for another 5 years'. I don't think Mad Max is quite ready to be dictated to by the teams, but I reckon Bernie will be pestering him (probably paying him) to back down.

I can't see the split happening at all TBH. The teams would struggle to get a new series off the ground, especially with all the lawsuits that the FIA and FOM would throw at them. It would screw F1 too, and Max and Bernie are way too clever to let that happen. It's all posturing and posing, part of the negotiations.
