Evening folks. Got a slight wee problem with my CBR 600F. The post may be a bit long as I tend to waffle on
Coming home from work on Sat, bike started up fine & rode perfectly back home until I got 1/2 mile from my front door, slowing down for a roundabout, the bike started to run really rough & eventually cut out.
As she was coming to a slow stop, I tried twisting the throttle, but nothing happened. I pushed it into the layby & walked back home.
After around an hour, I went back to my bike with jump leads at the ready, but thought I'll try & start it without the leads first, just in case she fires up, & she did .
Now yesterday I went into town, did a few bits & on my way back, she started to run really roughly, almost 'kangarooing' as I'm riding along & again came to a slow stop & cut out.
This all happened at low speeds by the way (under 30 mph).
I tried to start her again, but all I heard was a very fast clicking noise, which I have now located just infront of the battery housing. (I forget the name of the part )
I waited around an hour for my g/f to come rescue me with a tool box & jump leads. I jump started the bike & thought excellent, I'll get it home at least .
Got about a mile down the road & she started running really rough again. I managed to crawl the 4 ish miles home at 20 mph running again really roughly.
Now my first thoughts was the battery. I've since trickle charged it for 12 hours, tried it today & she started up fine.
But if it was a low battery charge, this wouldn't cause the sudden rough & lumpy running, would it? I thought the battery was initially there just to start the bike & obviously run the electricts after starting.
My brother mentioned it could be the alternator packing up.
The bike is a 1991 with 17k miles on the clock.
Shes been an angel until now
Any help or suggestions would be a great help. Even better would be a helping hand this weekend . I'm based in West Sussex, near Haywards Heath. I make a nice cuppa......

As above but you can check it by opening the fuel tank once it conks out and if its under a vacuum you will hear it sucking air in.
My moneys on poor battery performance though ____________________ RS125 > CBR6 > SV650S > ZX636R > GSX1300RZ Hayabusa > 06 RSVR Mille > SV1000S > Street Triple 765 RS |

Wow, cheers for all the replies guys. I'm overwhelmed
Err, where abouts is the reg/rec located I have since charged the battery & started her the other day, but didn't actually go out for a spin. What is reg/rec short for
I'll get my ass down to Halfords or look on Ebay for a voltmeter & do the suggested tests on the battery.
Again, thanks for all your help, I really appreciate it.
to you all & a virtual beer/larger on me

Just to add my experience...
...my '94 CBR6 suffered similar symptoms a few years ago. It would be running fine then suddenly start to run rough and the lights would start to dim. Eventually the bike would cut out and refuse to start.
I replaced the reg/rec and tested the battery to ensure all was fit, but it continued happening. Eventually booked it into a workshop who traced the fault to a melted connector block that was shorting out onto the frame. unfortunately I don't know exactly where the block was in the loom, because I didn't locate it myself and was too stupid to ask at the time.
So as well as the other checks suggested above I'd carefully examine the loom to check that nothing has worn through.

Right, sorry for late update. Instead of buying a voltmeter, I borrowed tonight & the survey said:
With lights off:
12.47 volts @ idle
12.4 volts @ 6k revs
And with the lights on:
12.04 volts @5k revs
So new battery time
If it is a case of needing a new battery, will I still need to replace the Rec/Reg box, or was the bad running due to the battery being shot
I've just seen the price of a new reg/reg on Wemoto, £60 odd quid
Thanks again for all your help.
