Had this car for about 5 years and could do with a change. Cam belt due in the not too distant future and the exhaust sounds like a boy racers now.
Just looking for:

5 door
A little bit quicker than the 1.4 16v I have currently
Better fuel economy (mine struggles to maintain 40)
Cheap to tax and insure

What are some good options? Been having a browse and it looks like you don't get as much for your money these days. High mileage 1.2 corsas seem to start at 3k.
Any suggestions?

Spend 400 on sorting the exhaust and cambelt and keep 2.6k in the bank.
Thumbs Up

Just go on Autotrader and see what the lowest mileage diseasel you can find is? Should be able to find a decent Beemer or a vectra/mondeo if you want something newer.

With such low budget I would rather keep it and get it fixed.

I've got 2004 Astra G 3-door too. Good cars, not a lot to go wrong with them.
I won't be selling mine until next year or year after. My budget will be about 10k though and I already know what I will be getting.

For 3k I somehow cannot imagine a much better car than the one I've already got. Don't bother unless you really cannot live with 3-door car anymore.

If you must change your car, avoid diesel. At 3k you will be into common rail cars that will grenade themselves at the earliest oppertunity leaving you wanting your astra.

If you want to swap to a different car that's entirely up to you.

What I will say though is that the cambelt on the 1.4 16v Astra MK4 is pretty easy to do so don't think that it is a big job. Also the exhaust after the cat is in three pieces as far as I can remember and all three pieces can be had off Ebay for around £100 or so. They are quite cheap cars to run and maintain. Thumbs Up

Fair enough, if there's nothing better with a £3000 budget I'll keep it. It just failed MOT on the exhaust so that's being sorted now. Knew it would happen it was sounding like a chavvy 106.
I quite like the modern Mondeo, and the Vectra and newer shape Astra? Maybe get something like that next year. £205 a year on tax is a bit hefty on my car and the performance is uninspiring.
