yes, its the little plastic adjusters you see on variable resistors & im presuming it controls/adjusts the timing, but what would be the advantage to that?
would there be any advantage?
would there be any point?
cheers,

Sounds like it - someone is
Broadly speaking, the more advanced the timing, the more power the bike will have. If you go too far mind you, you can cause the motor to go pop (consider making the full force of the BANG as the piston is still on its way up - that isn't going to end well is it!! ).
Why have they made it adjustable? Coz they could??
Perhaps they were experimenting with different grade fuels or 'squish'. The 'octane' in fuel helps reduce the onset of pre-ignition (igniting too early and forcing the piston back) so in theory, you can run a more advanced ignition with say 102 octane fuel than with say 92 octane. He might have been trying to get the benefits of higher octane fuel. Most bikes will be set up for say 92RON (octane) so you can get more power without damaging the engine by lobbing in 102RON and advancing the ignition ... the trick is to know/judge how far!!
I guess he advanced it as far as he could before getting the signs of 'pinking'
in short, don't randomly twiddle, you might end up with ignition that was too far advanced and it go pop!! ____________________ The purpose of life is to fight maturity. |
