The brakes of my fzr are pretty much jammed shut with crap but they still work and the bike is a nightmare to bleed the system.

anyway i have another set of calipers for the bike and going to fix them up while using the bike. the best way i know of to remove pistons is to use the bikes brake system however since i have the brakes already set up what other ways can i remove the pistons?

Hi, sorry but thats the best way to get them out, i had too when i did mine a short time ago.
Since you said it has loads of crap built up on them, chances are you wont be able to blow them out with compressed air.

So bite the bullet and hook em up to the lines and pump away!!

A tip for those without an air line. Get an old bicycle inner tube and cut the valve off, leaving a bit of rubber around the outside. Trim the rubber into a circle until it will screw into the banjo bolt hole snugly, then use either a car footpump or £9.99 bicycle pump to push the pistons out.

I use a £30 track pump and I have had it off the end of the 150PSI gauge before. Never failed with this method though, although I did once fire a KR1-S brake piston the full length of the back garden. I was glad that one wasn't pointing at the windows. Wrap the caliper in something more substantial than paper towels if you don't want to copy this mistake Mr. Green

Cheers

That is an excellent tip grim - does it work with the high pressure valves too?

Question #2 - what happens when you have multi piston calipers and force onr out using the compressed air, leaving one still in and no ability to repressurise? Just put the cylinder back in lightly and jam it so it cannot come out, making the other one move?

I will be trying this this week I reckon.

DOG,
I've used Presta and Schraeder valves but the smaller Presta ones are better as they are easier to get into the banjo hole.

The answer to your second question is: Cable Ties. The free-est moving piston will come out first, clean that, pop the seals and clean behind them, seals back in, thin layer of brake grease on piston and put that back in and then cable tie it in place. I bought a shed load of cable ties off Fleabay for a couple of quid, so it doesn't get expensive. The good thing about using cable ties is that they stop the opposite piston hitting the first one when it pops out.

Cheers
