Did it when I was 20, got fed up with working in factories and doing the same thing day in and day out. I was also on the run for a serious offence, (later dropped to a lesser charge). All I took with me was a blanket and ,strangely enough, a George Thorogood record. When I told my boss I was leaving, he said - "you do realise that if you stay here another 20 years, you'd be foreman?" No brainer really. My girlfriend was a bit upset and when she asked what to tell my mates etc, I said, "I dunno, tell them I'm dead". This she did and when I returned a few years later, (by that time I was living in France), there was a lot of surprised faces. I'd recommend it to just about anyone but you need to keep your wits about you and it's a different world out there now than it was when I hit the road. ____________________ Space Is Deep |

If i was single i would do it now. If i wasn't with my GF i wouldn't really have anywhere to live or anything to do. So it would make sense to do one. I think about it everyday. ____________________ Current: Honda Nsr 125

Yes. After university I moved to Macclesfield, and a year later, I packed up my belongings and moved down south.
And then after I went travelling, I came back to the UK and moved to the southcoast...again where I don't know people. Though I have slowly been making friends (mostly through the bike scene).
Two years ago I thought about relocating again, seriously considering both Nottinghamshire and Norfolk. Needless to say, neither happened...but I rarely 'feel' settled in an area...so it's likely to happen again. ____________________ Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter won't mind - Dr. Seuss |

Yes, much as I love my wife and children, and currently have the best job I've ever had (all relative I know), there is a small part of me that just craves the solitude. ____________________ My claim to fame: Austin Vince nicked my pen... |

In my case, I spent about 6 months driving around the country visiting people I had met before and dossing on their sofas. For a couple of years before I left, a load of us would usualy set off on a Friday night and come back on a Sunday, visiting various places, (a lot of them in North wales and around the Welsh border),stopping at any pubs that looked biker friendly and meeting any friendly locals. I also did all the free festivals and met some nice people there, eventualy I met a girl and went to stay with her in Cambridge. While there, I met another girl, this time French and moved back to Paris with her. I ended up living in France for a couple of years, the first year just travelling around and then working in Paris until I broke both feet in a climbing accident while back in the UK for Crimbo and lost my job/girlfriend/home.
I think how well you get on can be a lot down to luck but I've found that people in a lot of other European countries are very hospitable, esp compared to here in the UK. Making an effort with the local lingo is a must. It was fairly easy to find casual work then too, I doubt it's the same now.
I know one thing, some of the bigger estates in the UK are pretty run down now and miserable places to live. If I was growing up in one, I'd certainly want to move out asap, you don't have to go abroad, just somewhere better. The only redeeming feature about some of these estates is that you can meet some really cool people, (as well as the scum bags - muggers, crack dealers, nonces etc). It sometimes seems the bigger shithole the place is, the better the people. ____________________ Space Is Deep |
