OK so here goes, my better half has a Cooter Brown frame (stamped only with the manufacturer no) into which he is going to put a GSXR 1100 engine (super fast chop). If he gets the old frame no stamped onto the new frame thus keeping paperwork together is there a way of getting a different/new number for the old frame (sports) so it can be sold more easily?

Hi

Legitimatly not really.

He could buy another frame with a log book and use the identity of that.

The DVLA seem to be getting more dodgy on this at the moment with cars and will probably follow with bikes soon.

Legitimatly the custom frame with a doner engine should almost certainly land up on a Q plate. Way round this would be buying everything new for the custom frame (ie engine, suspension, etc).

All the best

Keith

Hi

It is, but with much changed the view is it isn't the same bike.

Stamping up another frame with the original numbers is pretty dodgy as well.

All the best

Keith

One of the latest DVLA scams is with old land rovers. Fit a new chassis and you have to have it inspected by them.

If you fit a new chassis and in the process change from leaf springs to coil springs they may well refuse to allow you to use the original registration mark.

The way it used to work is you would stamp the new (chop) frame with the numbers from your old frame & destroy the old frame, not strictly legit i admit but as you legally own both frames nobody has been hurt & a blind eye was always turned (bit of a grey area)

whats happening now is some MOT testers are being bullied by vosa into reporting a "substantially altered vehicle" & refusing to mot it untill its passed an sva test, this is to combat ringing but is also picking up plenty of home grown specials

Its getting worse & more & more testers are being told how to recognise an altered frame (as if they didnt know already) the upshot of all this is you would need to prove the history of the parts on the bike through receipts etc + tot up a certain amount of points to keep your existing reg EG so many for stock engine, so many for stock chassis etc etc then submit the bike for an sva

The above bunch of bull is getting more common by the month & there is no grandfather rights EG "its been on the road like that for 15 years" is no defence + all current regs will apply EG noise regs lighting requirements, indicators etc etc

The only bright point on the horizon is that while an sva can be another expense if the bike is built right its not a great deal of problem to pass one
