I was in america a few years back, that was my first taste of open air speed. I was on a 600cc quad bike on dusty North Carolina back roads. I was given a few tips on riding / driving this quad and then i was on my own. i remember doing approximatly 70 - 80 MPH on this quad. Looking back, this was probably quite stupid as i didnt have a lid on or any protective clothing... well, i did have shades on to stop the gravel and dust going in my eyes.

I was told, "...reach high revs... clutch...change gear..." i found out by accident that you can change up, and down with no clutch at all. i thought this was really good. "wohoo, look at me, i can change gear with no clutch..."

I have also found out that i can do the same on my NSR.

Changing up at high revs seems to be a bonus, it seems quicker and smoother than, power > power off > clutch > change > Power...

What damage am i doing to my NSR by not using my clutch. I dont do it all the time, its mainly on main roads at high speed.

I'm assuming that when you change up you're not just staying on the throttle and forcing it into gear. If you are then things will break. Soon.

The best way to do it is put very slight pressure on the lever, then back off the throttle and it should snick into gear on its own. Then back on the throttle.

It's not good to go clutchless on down shifts or in the lower gears.

It done correctly clutchless shifts won't do any harm at all.

up-shifting is done power > power off > shift > power

if i shift without the clutch, i dont touch it at all, not, just use a little.

down shifting, not as regular, and to be honest, by accident most of the time. get to V low revs b4 shifting. have tried shifting up and down when the RPM can not have been right and it hasnt done anything, except remind me that i shouldnt really be doing it without the clutch. After all, thats what its there for.

i'm geussing it shouldn't do not much damage if you have plenty of gearbox oil, i never use to use the clutch on my motox bike but i always made sure i was in a power band before shifting up, shifting down i never use the clutch either unless i was coming to a complete stop and never had a problem with my gearbox

Dont do a clutchless shift from 1st to 2nd (the gap if you will is a bit big since it has to go through neutral) and if done correctly you shouldn't be doing that much damage at all. So dont worry about that.

Do not however go down through the box without the clutch. Its not that it will do any more damage than going up, its the fact you run a large risk of locking the back wheel if you do it while carrying to much speed etc.

Up = fine, down = bad (unless your litteraly at walking speed then it just drops down anyway)

Watch how you go on them roads up home mate, you know they aint used to seeing bikes up that way. Wink

There was quite an argument about this a long time ago on here.

My personal opinion is that if done correctly it should do less damage to the gearbox... and it won't do any damage to the clutch mechanism as it is 'clutchless'.

Using the clutch you are forcing the gears to mesh together, while doing it clutchless they are going together when they want to.
Trying to force clutchless shifts aint going to be good though Neutral

As you get used to it you should be able to go up and down the gearbox no probs, though most people stick with upshifting.

I nearly always cluchless shift up the gears, but I never do it going down because I was told by a mechanic that it's a great way to kill a gearbox (he may not have been right, but better safe than sorry Confused ).
