Just bought an XT350

Finally found a greenlaner localish to me, a yellow and black 1990 XT350 a bit like this...

Quite high mileage but I think it's been used on road for commuting mainly so seems in good mechanical shape, if a little tatty. Engine seems very good, starts easily and pulls well and the brakes are way better than the other greenlaners I've looked at. I'm going to gradually try to bring the cosmetics up to scratch too.

Now I need a spare set of wheels as it will be used mainly on road but I want to be able to put off road wheels/tyres on for the odd weekend, anyone know what other wheels fit in case I can't find XT ones? I might even try to find some supermoto wheels, though it came with new Avon Distanzias on it so these will be used first.

TTR600 front wheels fit, thats what i had to get for mine as the rim corroded away, I also think that the XT225 Serow had the same wheel when I was looking. Try posting a question on yamahaclub.com - so0me very knowledgable blokes on there. I've still got the hub, disc etc from my old wheel if you want to get another rim and relace it.

Was that a straight swap, no spacers or anything? Does the back wheel fit too?

Yes - straight swap, as far as i was told its the same wheel, not sure about the back wheel though, wasn't trying to find one then.
Keep your eyes on ebay, sets of wheels do come up but I've only ever seen one set of supermoto wheels, went for £120.00 should have bought them really but was skint at the time and have kicked myself since. I found that if it looked like someone was breaking a bike but didn't list the wheels try emailing them a question.

Question for you, why when I attach a photo does it not load straight away, what am i doing wrong?

When your post opens the picture is straight there, with mine you always have to load it on screen. In the add attachment section you browse to the file you are going to use, click the file then click add attachment (as far as I know anyway) but when the post is added it appears as per my original reply to your post. Is it becuase my files are JPG's as opposed to IMG (what is IMG - haven't come across that one before).

Any ideas?

Ok, I see what the problem is...

I'm just linking to a picture that is online somewhere else using [img] tags. Quote my first post with the picture in it and you'll see what I've typed to get it to appear. I'm not using the attachment function at all, this is all just in the body of the text.

If you want to post your own pictures like this you need to host them on the internet somewhere like photobucket and then just copy the link to them. paste the link into your message, highlight it and then just press the Img button.

I hadn't done this so I just linked to a picture off google images.

Above the text box when you are writing a post. There's shortcut buttons for everything there but you can just type [img]....[/img] too.

What do you think of your XT and what does it go like? Mine seems to top out at about 85 but i'm not sure what gearing is on it, could do with a bit lower for off road.

Got any pics yet?

when new the std XT350 was tested at a true 94mph! It would do a 15sec 1/4. The early ones had the full 31.5bhp, but later bikes were restricted to 17bhp which would reduce the top end performance quite a bit.

You mentioned on another thread that there was another 5-6bhp to be had fairly easily, whats the wrok req. mines got a full predator system on it but std airbox and filter. More power's always welcome!

How did they restrict the newer ones to 17bhp?

They had restricted intake boot things, not sure what they're called but the rubber and metal bits between the carbs and the engine. First thing I checked on mine but mine's not restricted. It's pretty obvious if you take them off as they will have smaller holes than is obviously necessary given the size of the intakes on the engine, only about half to a third the full bore.

I think they are set up to run lean which won't be helped by the freer exhaust. Rejetting should help increase the power but from what I've read it's hard to find different sized jets that fit. I need to tinker with mine as I think it's lacking a bit at the top end. I'm useless with carbs but seems to me that might be an issue with the secondary carb as it only comes into play at higher throttle? Either that or it's just 'cos I'm used to a rush of power at higher revs with my CBR that just doesn't exist with this bike Laughing

I'm not good with carbs either and i think that the second carb just makes it harder to set up, god knows how you're supposed to do it, I know mine opens further through the throttle opening but if it works when you're riding - who knows. mine is very torquey at the bottom end but does feel a bit breathless at the top. Thought it would be more prone to lifting the front wheel as well.

This is my first off roader so I've no idea what to expect but it does seem to run out of puff at higher revs. I'll maybe check the diaphragm on the secondary CV carb and I suppose it could even be a clogged air filter. That said, it gets up to 80 with me sat bolt upright so it's not massively weak.

Mine's also been a great starter so far going first time normally, hot or cold even after I've dropped it and it's been lying on it's side in a ditch for a minute or two Thumbs Up

The original engine in mine was shagged, rings snapped, bore marked and play in the crank, now that was a bitch to start but it did still run - just. Bought a second hand engine with 14000km on it & prayed a lot when I slung it back in.It fired up 3rd kick with crappy old fuel & now its got new filters, oil etc, fires up no bother 1st or 2nd kick every time.
This is my first 4 stroke traily and like you i'm not sure if "they're all like that sir" or if I've got a good un, my brothers just bought an 2004 XR250 (but he lives 120 mile away) I'm hoping to go down with mine in a van shortly and have a toot out on both down some lanes, be intreresting to compare 19yrs newer against 100cc bigger and marginally more experience in the seat, ha ha!
