Hi

I have a Yamaha SR 125 and was wondering if anyone could suggest whats wrong.

I filled the bike up with too much oil (i no im dumb!) so it blew the head gasket, thats been changed now. I did have a problem with my gear box so the friction plates, the steel plates and the flywheel has been changed.

As you can guess we had the whole bike appart to fix it however we put the starter motor back on last night and noticed its turning the wrong way!! Any suggestions or ideas why this is happening?
Thanks Surprised

You've probably managed to get the earth and live connections the wrong way around somehow. The starter motor won't turn the engine over if it spinning the wrong direction anyway.

Wrong polilaty, swap the postive and negtive connectors around, on the starter motor.

Assuming that said large gear is in constant mesh with the flywheel, the starter motor running in reverse won't spin it, as the sprag (one-way) clutch between the motor and the starter gear won't engage.

Well the only way a motor can run backwards is if the power is applied the same i.e. pos to neg, neg to pos. There is no other way. try a multimeter across the terminal when you press the starter.

Don't know the SR, but all starter motors I've touched use the mounting lugs as earth so there's only the power connection to undo. So you can't wire 'em up back to front.

If you have the motor apart though, and put it back together wrong it will spin the wrong way.

For my own info since I've never had a problem (so far) with bike starters. If the gears aren't engaging could it be that the starter motor is just not (don't know proper name) ejecting the starter gear on the the main cog. I know this can be a common problem on some cars and the fix is usually to hit the back of the starter with a SOFT hammer to release it.

Marki, if you mean a Bendix type arrangement you generally only find them on BM's, Guzzis and the like.

If it was a Suzuki I'd say the rollers or the springs that push them onto the drive boss were knackered. that way the starter motor turns fine but the rollers don't grip what they oughta and the engine doesn't turn.

Is that the set-up on the SR?

The rollers (#5) grip the boss on the big gear wheel until the engine's spinning fast enough for the centrifugal effect to overcome the 'push' of the springs. It's a common wear problem on old GS fours.

try turning the starter housing about 1/4 turn to right..and align screws in newopening between magnets, that will reverse polarity on windings...

I'm sure that they've sorted the problem in the intervening seven years.

Read the date before posting.

That's the crappiest reason to flounce in the history of forums.
If a thread is more than, say, a year old, then it can safely be considered to have been long abandoned. It's usually worth starting a new one, as it won't attract the ire of established users.

If, however, you still wish to depart BCF, none of us will stop you; although contacting the admin to have your account deleted may result in an exceptionally long wait on your part.

Here's an SQL query that Korn can run:
