Hey,
i'm just looking for some advice really...
at the moment i have a yamaha YZF R-125
but if i pass my test at the end of this month i am looking to upgrade to a 250cc bike and i was wondering what people would recommend.
i have been looking at the hornet 250 and the ninja 250 but was just looking for some more ideas,
any suggestions?
cheers ____________________ RGE, Ride in peace. |

There's also the CBR 250 and the Hyosung GT250R (ridden one and got one sat in my garage)
The Hyosung is a good bike but will be more expensive to buy atm.
CBR250 would be sweet. Can't go wrong with the Hornet though, although the 600 is a better deal ____________________ '99 Hornet 600 , VFR 400 NC30 '92 , Kasawamasaki GT 550 , '98 Hornet 600

The Ninja has already been mentioned, as has the mental Aprilia RS250. There are a few other old 250 race reps, but they're all high maintenance. Hyosung do a number of 250s (a race rep, a naked bike and a cruiser) and a few other companies also do cruiser-style ones (or did them, so they're available 2nd hand). So I'll go over four more options, all Hondas.
CBF250

Basic commuter 250, single cylinder, only about 20bhp. Reasonable number about for not a lot of money
CB250
https://www.manualesdemotos.net/catalog/images/CB-250.jpg
Preceded the CBF250, twin cylinder, roughly the same power as the CBF, obviously cheaper as it's older.
Hornet 250

You've already mentioned it, has about 44bhp derestricted to my knowledge, so you'd have to get a restricted one. Does crazy high revs! Looks cool too.
VTR 250

Bit of a different choice this one. Fairly rare, as they're an import. V-twin, looks like a mini Ducati Monster. 32bhp, so just under the limit.

Seriously though, 250cc isn't a great capacity bracket these days. ZX2R Ninja - crap. That's about it for new bikes barring that Hyosung kipperbang or whatever it is. ____________________ 18:54:48 Rob Fzs: jews don't give away stuff for free

According to what I can find on the interweb (sorry for the lack of standardisation for the figures, I'm just replicating what I've found):
CBF250 - 80mph, 1/4m in 16.5sec (sounds slow, but that's roughly equal to a Clio 172), 60mpg (sounds pessimistic for a single-cyl 250)
CB250 - 80mph, 1/4m in 17sec (Golf GTi Mk1 territory), 75mpg
Hornet - 110mph, 0-60 in 6sec ish (assume that's for the de-restricted version), can't find fuel figures
VTR250 - 90-95mph, 3.7l/100km (which in good ol' English is about 77mpg) ____________________ TARMAC - Automotive blog *UPDATED 26/3/09 - Abandoned fuel stations to go electric? ~ Buy my eBay stuff!
