Hi guys

Picked up an '05 Triumph Speed Four at the start of the year, it's been garaged since then with the occasional spin to keep her healthy. Finally passed my test the other week so got her out on the road proper.

This weekend there were more than a couple of times where I couldn't get first gear. Couple of times I rocked the bike backwards a few inches and it seemed to jump into first. Bike was given a full service before I picked it up in January but has probably only done 20 miles before this weekend.

I'm by no means a mechanic but the clutch doesn't seem to be biting too early, cable seems fine and the gear change rod and arm seem in good nick. Am I missing something simple or do I need to run it to the dealers?

Has the oil been changed? If not thats the first thing I would try before taking anything apart.

Chain at the corrent tension and well lubed?

Are the linkages from the left rear set to the actual bit where it goes into the engine all well greased?

Those are both simple things that can cause your gearbox to seem huffy.
