I think if you lurk on many car enthusiast forums you'll notice a similar trend.
The difference between cars drivers and bike riders is that far more of the motorcycles are enthusiasts, whereas with cars for most people it's a way to a means. ____________________ My Flickr |

I lurk about on a few motorcycle forums and there are always threads about police, car drivers, truck drivers, poorly maintained roads and all manor of other things. Even when doing my DAS all the instructor ever talked about was how people were out to get us, we're a dying breed, etc.
Judging by the threads I've read and the few bikers I know it seems like we're actually a pretty mental bunch. Most of us break the law in some way but then moan about other road users and speed cameras and then blame most accidents on someone else. Wasn't there a statistic recently that most bike related deaths were actually attributable in some way to rider error and quite often excessive speed?
I'm the first to admit that I often ride too fast and we've all gone into corners and only just made it out alive before. Is it really just a "few" of us giving all bikers a bad rep or are we all just as bad as each other? |
No they are all pretty much valid points those people are making, just look at how hard the bike test is compared to the car test. As for police, truckers, the laws on speeding, poorly maintained roads they are maoned about by car drivers too. The fact that some things are illegal doesn't mean that it should be. Things like loud exhuasts and small plates, there's really no need for them to be illegal, the fact that ANPR can't read them doesn't justify stripping you of the pleasures of a small plate. There are FAR too many laws, a lot of them petty and over restrictive on our freedoms. It's your life and you should be free to live it with as few restrictions on that as possible. |

im own a motorbike but im not full of shit.
'bikers' are full of shit. blame everything on everyone else, say fuck da police, think they are valentino rossi, are often tough guys... are the type of people who always have gone one better... be it owning a better bike or even having a 'better' crash.

That type of answer always makes me laugh, especially when that muppet Clarkson starts going on about speed cameras. I'll just start coming round at night and stealing your bikes shall I? The law says I can't but clearly as a society we're allowed to choose which laws we want to obey. |
If they put as much money, manpower and effort into the detection and prevention of motorcycle theft as they do into catching people speeding, there would probably be a great deal less bitter, disillusioned motorcyclists out there.
There are also degrees of lawbreaking.
Speeding by itself is a victimless crime. You are hurting no-one, it's just on a presumed potential to cause harm, a potential that is vastly overrated in terms of the resources applied to it in my oppinion.
Dangerous driving is a different matter as the potential to cause harm is rapidly approaching 100%. It's a matter of when, not if something happens. I have no problem with people being stopped and prosecuted for driving without due care or dangerous driving. This may include inappropriate speed for the conditions but shouldn't, I feel, be based on a simple numerical formula of xxmph =DwDCA and xxxmph = DD as it seems to be heading just now. Each case should be treated on its merits.
Theft directly affects another individual. As such the potential to cause harm to another person is already 100% and prosecution is always appropriate. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink.
