Hi Folks

Gotta do 300mile round trip from peterborough to manchester in a couple of days.

Never ridden more than 100 miles in one day before Embarassed

Any tips or advice as it may be 5-6hrs riding depending on road/traffic conditions.

Got to use A1 /M1 but going to break it up by using the A616(Highly Recommended apparently.) Smile

Cheers Thumbs Up

What sort of tips/advice are you looking for? It's the same as riding 50 miles, just takes longer.

Hear what your saying, but riding for 6hrs isn't the same as riding for 1 hour is it? Thumbs Up

More like 49 miles and a bit longer still.
if you are only used to doing short bits just do them. link them up with coffee breaks. If you feel tired stop and have a rest, drink plenty and eat little but often.
What bike are you doing it on?

Check the weather forecast and wear the right kit. If you get wet, remember there are hand dryers in service stations. If you get cold, I've heard a newspaper down the front of your jacket works wonders. Thumbs Up

Be fine, just take it easy and settle in for a longer ride
Dont set off with your hair on fire.

Set a speed on the motorway that is comfortable and stick to it.
Keep eye on fuel. Prob not as much of a problem on the Bandit, but a petrol station is a Hornets second home. Smile Keep your eye on it

i have done 150 miles in one lump (+ fuel stop) before up to newcastle.

On A roads I tend to find a car going decent speed and tuck in behind it, especially at night as my lights are crap. a BMW 3 series has lights for us both. Smile

it will take longer than 5/6 hours once you factor in fuel stops and comfort breaks, rehydrating and food

your be fine mate, ive recently done 2200 miles in 6 days. keep a check on fuel and use your trip counter so you no when to fill up. keep a steady pace dont worry if your overtaken just ride at a comfortable speed. i did manchester to Essex in 5 hrs as part of my trip in heavy rain filling up twice...

Err, it is to me. If I'm riding along and need fuel, I get fuel. If I'm flagging a bit I stop and get something to eat/drink. If I need to pee I curse and moan and hang on until I need fuel again...

Anyway point is, you ride until you feel like you should stop for a bit. Rinse and repeat.

A1/M1 300 miles. You should easily be able to average 75mph. Therefore solid riding 2 hours there 2 hiours back. I can't really see the problem TBH.

I'm gonna be doing the same sort of mileage in the next couple of days upto loch ness (just camping out for a couple of days).

I'll be giving the bike a full check over first.(tyres, chain, oil, bearings, lights e.t.c.)

Having done quite a few long distance trips on bikes i know to dress for the worst Laughing so plenty of layers underneath my bike gear and full waterproofs on from the off.(even if it's not raining it's excellent for keeping the wind chill out)
Wear the thickest gloves you have and also thick socks.(it gets cold real quick)
Ear plugs and full face mask are a must for me on a motorway.

Nice easy cruise the whole way Thumbs Up

I'm new to this & isn't that what forums are about?

Asking more experienced people for advice?

Thanks to everyone else for their 'constructive & positive' advice!

Thanks. Thumbs Up

I'm not 'having a go', I'm explaining that riding 300 miles (particularly in summer) isn't a big deal that needs planning and preparation. All you do is listen to your body and if it wants a break, you take one.

Some people would treat it like an unsupported crossing of the Kalahari, carrying three changes of clothes, spare parts and jerry cans full of fuel. You'e concerned about it - you wouldn't have posted if you weren't. But if the only people who post are the ones advocating breaks every 15 mins and constant calls to home to make sure they know where you are, well you're gonna continue to be concerned about it cos they're maintaining the illusion that it's a huge undertaking. If I were you, I'd be taking reassurance from the people like me who are saying it's no big deal at all.

Bendy is right, a bit blunt, but right. 300 miles is a usual afternoons ride for alot of people, I did 350 on Sunday just to find out where a road went in Wales.
On a 600 Bandit you are fine, just make sure you have fuel, breakdown cover is always handy and gives you peace of mind, but you don't need it. just take your time stop when you want to, go when you feel like it.

I did 430 miles just to see the Isle of Man from Scotland.
Just sit back and enjoy the journey. Stick some music on your phone/iplayer or whatever, stop when you feel you need a break or fuel and take your time. A 300 mile trip is nothing to worry about, just treat it as a normal ride on the bike, when you get there you will wonder why you were worrying in the first place.

Most of all though, stay alert and ride safe Thumbs Up

Agree with the above. While it might be alot for you as you've never done it before, it really isn't far. The bike will be fine, you have a nice comfortable seat and position on the Bandit aswell.

All you need to do is treat it like an every day ride. If the petrol light comes on, stop for petrol, you will never struggle for petrol stations. If you need a drink/rest/eat, pull over and do these things. Other than that...just keep on riding!

You will be fine Thumbs Up

I'm doing 60ish to pick up some parts, might go to uni and get some books too so that would make it 270 miles. I've done that 270 mile round trip by mid morning before... on ZX6R!

I have been known to fill up the hornet 3 or 4 times in one day. Laughing

Dude - that's not Bendy having a go. That's Bendy telling you the honest truth - just take it as a journey, not some kind of epic odyssey.

600 miles is a noteworthy distance for a trip, but if you space it out with breaks, then the worst thing that'll happen to you is:
a) you may find that you're getting a bit bored
b) you'll have some aching muscles at the end of it
c) you'll find yourself obsessing over the fact that in about 3 miles time, you'll have x thousand miles on the clock*

Enjoy the fact that you can say you've done long journeys on your bike - that's what it's there for...

* Slightly pathetic admission here: I actually photographed my car's clocks when I got it to a perfect 50K. Yes, I was succumbing to possibility c. I'm half tempted to find the photo now...

This week I will be riding Stoke to Newcastle then Newcastle to Llanelli and finally back to Stoke. I reckon thats about 800 miles ish. I don't have an ipod and find myself wondering about things such as if the knowledge of mortality is good or what stops planets from falling out of the universe. By the time I've pondered over this junk I'm usually there. If not then I'll probably move onto a bit of evolution theory, dino to sparrow?

TBH I really don't set myself a timetable, I get there when I get there. I stop when I feel like it and if I want a nap then I'll pull over. Enjoy it, the weathers as good as it gets and your on a bike.

+1 on the breakdown recovery. I can't be arsed with messing about and its a great excuse for not getting to where your supposed to be.

I watch the miles quite a lot and I have photographed my bike's clocks at 60k & 72K (think it was 72, might have been 70 ).

What trousers you got?

I have spadas and bulletproof jeans.

The jeans are great for sitting a bit longer but be warned TIGHT well fitting boxers are a must or you need to prepare for some serious seat shuffling!

Man bunching is not big and its not fun Laughing
