PostPosted: 22:46 - 30 Jul 2009    Post subject: radiator leakage?? Reply with quote

cleaned up the bike the other day and took her out for a spin, and realised that the left hand side oiler pipe (from a bandit gsf600 sy) seemed to have abit of oil on it
the right hand side was bone dry
i cleaned it up and then checked a couple of days later, and it was there again
i think its from the bottom of the radiator (oil cooler) and were the metal pipe attatches to it, i tried tightening the two bolts, but still no results
its not pouring out of it, just now and then seeping
what to do.....?? i have no clue
any ideas?get new radiator?new pipe?simple fix?
many thanks

basically on the oil cooler (radiator) at the bottom left hand side were the pipe attaches to it, there seems to be some leaking and the oil runs down the pipe
i thought i could tighten up the two bolts that are used to attach the pipe to the radiator, but no luck
cheers

Does the pipe seal using a o ring, copper washer or olive?

here is the pic of it, you can see were it is shiny abit were the oil has come out of, and the pipe were the oil runs down
as for what seal, i havnt the slightest idea mate, by the looks of it, no seal, just metal on metal, oh wait, just checked teh old haynes manual, o rings
maybe the seal has gone and worn out maybe then?

Hi

If it is the same as the 1200 then I think there is a rubber O ring to seal that join.

All the best

finally back after checking the o ring seal on the radiator, and its in perfect condition
ive tried tightening the two bolts
but evey time i go out for a ride, i look down, and a little bit of oil has dripped onto the oil cooler pipe Sad
i dont know why it might be leaking still?

i also learnt the hardway by not draining oil out of bike before i undid the bolts Smile needed new oil anyways Smile come to think of it, i did put a little bit too much oil in last time (right on the full mark) could that be why?it was overfilling and found a little tiny place to seep out of?
any ideas people
cheers

even if it was overfilled it still should not seep out, show us a picture of the seal, and the exact spot the oil is coming out of make sure no part of the pipe has corroded ect. pipes tend to corrode due to road dirt and salt so maybe consider replacing the pipes??

another picture would help us diagnose better

it was spotless on the insde and on the joints, nice and smooth, i was hoping it was the o ring, but no such luck
if you look at the pic above you can see that the silver (slightly batterd paintwork) pipe, thats were it runs down, but i have noticed that some oil appears above the joint, and a little on the very bottom of the radiator, just above the joint
was worried that the radiator had a a hole in it, but nothing
bit confused Sad
il post pic back up and highlight were i mean:)

sorry mate get us a pic in the morning without that cover on it, check the bolts make sure their not too tight or too loose,

what makes you sure the o rings are totally fine and not slightly mis shapen, before you buy a new radiator or anything just buy some new rings and see how they do.

show a pic of the rings if you can

where the oil is coming out see if you can fit a bit of paper through it or a thin needle, try and locate exactly where is coming through, it might be a new radiator or pipe, or both. at high pressure the oil will pour through like its coming through a bit hole bu its being forced out a small hole reallt quickly

hard to see withit being in dark
just thought to myself, when i was messing about putting it back together, i was moving it backwards n forwards, i may have just moved the oring just out of place, so that might be why it has just started pouring out?
i will get up nice and early in morning and take it out again to see if it has Sad
looks like at this rate il be selling, and looking to get the bandit gt1250 Smile

it wbe a bit job to sort out, a sec hand part would likely do you good. let me know how it goes in the morning, remember have a towel to catch the oil from the radiator unless you want it on your floor.

i'll be up in the morning as i gotta clean and refit my carb on my cbr 400

Hi

If it is leaking where you appear to have circled then I don't think there is a joint there. As such would suggest the oil cooler is cracked.

All the best

ahhhh, well, i took it apart again this morning, the seal was fine, but i did noticed on the underside of the radiator were the seal would meet it, that the metal has bobbled alittle, this may have been the cause from the very beginning, with tiny amounts leaking out every so often, but now the oil is flowing out from the top of the bolt
basically, the thread had gone on the radiator, i noticed that the bolt wasnt getting any tighter, i used a bigger and longer bolt, but this still could nnot get it tight enough for it to close the gap Sad
looks like a new radiator for me, unless there is anyother way for it to be fixed?
i will be taking it down to shorrocks in preston in the morning
soooo.....anyone got a couple thousand pounds they have and dont need?im anfter the brand new 1250gt bandit Smile lol

Hi

You might be able to get someone to helicoil the bolt hole (with care, you don't want any swarf in the oil cooler)

New they are hideously expensive from Suzuki. Larger ones are cheaper, and I have a feeling that someone makes pattern ones for the Bandit (might be worth asking Sickpup).

All the best

was looking on ebay and noticed this https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Suzuki-Bandit-GSF-600-Oil-Cooler-Modified-Fittings-New_W0QQitemZ300340711184QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Motorcycle_Parts?hash=item45edb38f10&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14
looks like the correct one, with same fittings etc, tempted to order that in, i know suzuki dealer will order the oem part, and thats about £150, then they will fit it and charge me for that too, so it would be expensive
im tempted,lol

Hi

Looks like the ones I was thinking of. Pretty cheap.

From Suzuki I suspect they would be far more than £150. Robinsons Foundry list an oil cooler new for an early 600 Bandit at £390.57.

All the best

Keith
