(Mods please move this if it is in the wrong place!)

Hi everyone
As some of you might remember I bought a brand new Yamaha XT125X about 2 months ago. Since then I have been breaking in the engine and it went for its first service last week once the breaking in period was over (about 600 miles). However it is still struggling in the speed department, ie. It is going about 46 tops, managing 50 downhill! I have seen on the internet that these bikes should have a top end speed nearer 70mph. Therefore I was wondering if any of you guys would be able to shed any light on why my bike is still only reaching about 46mph, do you think there is something wrong with the bike?

Thanks for your help. Smile

If it's under warranty then take it back to the dealer and explain the problem. it is up to them to fix it, if you start doing anything other than maintenance you will void your warranty.

So do you think there is probably something wrong in the engine or somewhere then?

What is the RPM in top gear at 45mph? If it is anywhere near the red line then it is geared wrong if it is low down then there is a problem with the fuelling and isn't making enough power to get to its normal speed (around 60mph).

Does it rev freely or does it sound like it is struggling?

It is new, if there is a problem use the warranty. Do not try fixing it yourself as you will invalidate that warranty.

If its lackin speed since you bought it i.e. progressivly getting worse since purchase then book it in and get them to look at it, these bikes do not like to last long, its a shame because they're a good bike but there have been a few in the workshop for various problems.

Do a bit of googling, i bet its just the speedo uni/speedo pickup that needs replacing Wink

There have been a lot of reports of the speedos going haywire. I had an 07 XT125X and the speedo pickup needed replacing (just stopped reading) but sometimes they don't fail all together, they just read a lot lower than they should.

Either that or it has been set for the R model and is under reading stupidly (due to having a smaller front wheel, i think that works out right)

Either way, get it booked in and get it sorted under warranty Thumbs Up

The RPM is aroud 7500 at 45mph in top gear, doesn't sound like its struggling either.

Yep, think I'm going to have to book it in again! (3rd time since I bought it Evil or Very Mad !!)

I don't think it is the speedo reading wrong as it is definetly not going faster than 45mph, also Im certain the speedo reads correctly because I tend to always do about 29/30 in 30 zones and I haven't been done for speeding so it can't be reading slow... Smile
