i bought a pan european a few weeks back for £400 as a project and have it to a stage where im considering getting it m.o.t'd and have a couple of questions for anyone in the know.

1. do i need mirror(s)

2. does the steering lock have to work

3. does it matter if the centre stand is bent to the point where it wont work(sidestand is fine).

4.does the speedo have to work? and will they check it?

these thing's will be sorted eventually but i just want to get it on the road as my cbr is in need of a major service and need backup transport for a week or so while i sort the cbr out.

1. No
2. Don't think so.
3. Take it off
4. They don't check (well they've never checked mine).

i was gonna leave it incase it had any structutal purpose regarding the frame, it's just one of the legs is bent a bit and it wont sit right on the floor. I will be bending it back but need to find a suitable bar for that Laughing

ah! whenever my bike has had a centrestand they've always put the bike on it at some point. Not sure if it's a necessity or not though, sorry.

They use the center stand just because it's easier than using their machine to check the steering head etc.

I am pretty sure if you just say the center stand dosn't work it wont fail anything.

Some of the checks e.g. headlight alignment, bike needs to be vertical.
If it has centre stand they'll put it on that, if only sidestand, might ask you to sit on it.

just a thought. when i get the m.o.t sorted i was planning on taxing it straight away. The bike is in my dad's name as he stumped up the cash for the initial purchase of the bike and i am paying for all the part's and spending the time sorting it out, so it's kinda a shared bike if you know what i mean.

Thing is, my dad's not passed his test yet so wont be insured to ride it. I am insured to ride any bike with the owners consent but is this enough to tax the bike or do i need to do a multibike policy thing?

im pretty sure the bike has to have its own insurance policy, for your any bike thing to take effect. so unless someone is insured on it, you still cant ride it. if that makes sence?

im not 100% on that, but if so id go for the multibike option Thumbs Up

No your insurance covers bike whilst you are on it, however you cannot use yours to tax it. Bike will need insurance for that

fuksake, i hate rules. with the 6rr already insured is this likely to cost more to add the pan or stay the same as the pan is less risk and riding time will be shared between the 2

6rr=group 15

pan euro= group 13

Kwaker, my riding other bikes clause requires the bike to be insured by someone else (For their own use).
Most other policies probably are similar; this is so you don't just register the bike in someone elses name and then get free insurance on it.

I imagine there are some that are done how you say but I have only ever seen 'other bikes' cover when someone else is already insured on that bike.

edit: seconded on looking for some kinda of 'multi bike' discount insurer.

It's a very questionable subject.
Some claim not. Some insurance policies it definitely doesn't.
I'd tend to believe the others do. However, some police will see it flagged up as uninsured on the motorinsurance database and make trouble.

just read through my current policy and here's what is say's regarding other bikes on the 'certificate of motor insurance'

"the policyholder may also drive a motorcycle not belonging to him/her and not hired to him/her under a hire purchase or leasing agreement, as long as the policyholder has the owner's permission to drive it."

now i would have thought if i take this to the post office as proof it's pretty black and white and should be accepted, but i have a funny feeling there's a reason i cant Confused

The vehicle it's self has to be insured to get tax (unless you're a trader or something). Otherwise you'd just need one person with insurance to cover everything. No way around that.
One option could be to find a fairly old person (cheaper) to get a single day's insurance out for it on that daily bike insurance thingy (forget the url, google will answer).

Recently cost me £39 or so for three days insurance for a quite new MX5.

I also think this could be a problem that you face if you go down this route.

Also isn't it illegal to leave an uninsured vehicle on the public highway? You may be fine whilst you are actually riding this bike (if indeed your own policy covers you for 'riding other bikes' that are uninsured in their own right), but as soon as you step off this bike, it becomes an uninsured vehicle - your policy no longer covers it. As soon as that happens your father will become liable for allowing an unisured vehicle to be used/parked on the highway or something similar.

My best advice is that if you are planning to use it, cough up the dough and insure it properly.

re: the insurance thing, phone your insurance company and check whether they have a second bike policy. I phoned when I bought my XT to ask about adding it onto my CBR policy and was pleasantly surprised to be told it was cost me precisely nothing to add it on Shocked
