Need some help: tyres

Got a puncture in my back tyre on saturday... been told you can have them repaired but I just asked at a local garage an they said something about not being able to do it now anyway.

That's not a problem, I need a new one anyway but which one do I need?

Pirelli Diablo Rosso is what's on it at the moment but a tyre place said you can just put a standard Pirelli Diablo on an it's fine?

Standard = £92 + £12 to fit
Rosso = £135 + £12 to fit

Nearly £45 difference. I don't mind paying out but what's so different in the tyres? Is it worth the extra doe?

Personally that sounds damn cheap for a tyre these days, but I dont know pirelli's so I cant realy suggest which one to go for.

However, tyre plugging can be done but it needs to be pretty much in the center of the tread, but I personally wouldnt ever recommend it. Ive heard horror stories about it, and I just wouldnt risk it, however it can be a cheap alternative if you need a desperate "get out of jail" card.

My guess is that the Rosso is probably going to make a fair bit of difference over the standard Diablo, so for £45 I would probably take that!

Fuck it, I aint going to be doing any knee down maneuvers in the next 4 - 5 weeks so the standard one is going on it as it's getting sold.

I understand the rosso is a softer, more grippy tyre but if I'm selling it, no point shelling out the extra.

I just wanted to find out the difference in the tyres and price. If I was going to keep the bike, I'd put the rosso on it but might as well put a standard on now to sell.

Sickpup, my mechanic said to put a soft taper screw into it to enable me to ride the 10 miles to the tyre place. Would this be sufficient to hold up?

Well my bike is currently at the local tyre place getting it's tyre plug as we speak!!! My last tyre plug lasted until the end of the tyre life, as I picked up the nail just after I had brand new tyres fitted, as was damned if I was forking out another tonne. Smile

No more than 100mph. Not because of the plug (I actually forgot after a while that I had it), but because I don't generally hammer the bike...I pootle Cool

I had a plugged Azaro on the back of my FJ1200 that was fine for thousands of miles. Fj is a heavy old bus too.

It's not illegal. The BS doesn't recommend it but it is legal.

You generally find the places that refuse to repair them keep the tyre, plug it and pass it on to breakers yards for sale or put them on ebay.

Update on me: didn't get a plug, got a part worn instead, only because bloke said I would be needing new back tyre by the end of the year, so may as well opt for a £50 tyre.

It's actually barely used!!!! Bloody bargain.

I ended up screwing a small metal screw into the hole and riding it 10 miles to the tyre place. Got a shiney new diablo on it now.

Excellent work but with regards to tyres on sports bikes, I think it's the one thing worth forking out on, for me anyway.
