Just musing about working with a trade but apart from the usual 3 or 4 what others are there that are in demand?
I believe that most trades recognise the C of G certificate but what's the lowest or entry point level to start off with as its a time consuming qualification to obtain when trying to get going.
Anyone care to shed a little insight into their working day please feel free as have no real idea as to what the hell you lot do other than the domestic odd jobs.
There'll be a cuppa and a Hob Nob in it for you. ____________________ Current : MSX 125 Past : CBR 900RR Monkeybike : c50 LAC : ZXR750 H2 : FZR600 : ZX7R P3 : YW100 : TRX850: Trophy 900 T309 : GSXR 600 L0: Monkeybike : XJ6S Whosthedaddy |

Plumbing requires no official quals whatsoever.
Gas fitting however, different story...
.... and these new electrical regulations, well they are laughable. I went to Stow college to my 16th edition C&G, one of the girls in the class, was a salesperson on the electricals counter at B&Q, that was the closest she has come to domestic electrics and she was planning to set herself up as an electrician!
I am not criticising her, just the system.
Derive from that what you will.. ____________________ Eurotrip 2009

Im a chippy.
Work mainly on loft conversions.
Typical day.. Wake up at 7. Get to work for 8. Climb Scaffold, ladder down. open up loft. Then from that there cutting wood, nail it up, cut more wood..... Then nail it up.
I enjoy roofing. Ie: slates/tiles. Very intresting.
Some days are hard tho. Dont go home till 6 ish. Dormer day is a late one. (The day we build the flat roof and support it.)
But some are good. Like today, i got in had a cup of coffee. Worked a little. Insulated flood, cut out old perlin. Then boss turns up. Go to lunch at about 10 ish. Get back about 12, Battoned the roof. Then fitted velux windows. Home at 3.

Electrician is one of the best paid l was making 38k a year from qualifing at 19, theres also varoius types of eletrical work you can train and move into, problem is its hard to get a apprenticship and when you do the money is minimum wage for 3 years.
dont do house bashing as there just glorified builders, industral and site installation is were you will learn what you need.
l,m now working as a control systems engineer, less hands on work more programming and commissioning which suits me as it more challenging work. ____________________ Past:NRG50,AF1125(x2),NSR125RR,ZZR250,CX500,VFR400,KR1S,ZZR600(x2),CB400N,YZF1000(x2),KH125,Z200,FX400R,CBR954RR(x2)GPZ500S,GT550,VFR750F(x2),RD350N,XR650R,CBR600F,CB250,KDX250,YZF750R,CRM250,400EXC,KLR650,TTR600RE,DR350S,R100GSPD,RGV250,VMAX1200,DL650,KZ750 Present:G650XC,C12,CRF450X,1190ADV |

I like to smash shit out of buildings with a big angry machine. Qualifications for an apprenticeship include not making my tea too strong and keeping out of the way of my big angry machine. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

Went and spoke with the training place today, nice set up and seem pretty genuine to boot. Cost of getting started with C of G is pretty steep in some instances so may have a few weekend courses in each to see what's what and what I enjoy the most.
Hardest part may be the full time training during the week although there are options to do weekend for a little more money.

Like for like exchange does not require an electrician. As I mentioned previously, what classes as qualified in the electrics industry is laughable. |
x2.
So long as you've got an idea how to wire a plug, fit a socket, fit a light fitting, light switches etc and know to turn off the power at the fuse box when doing this stuff, nothing should go wrong.
I studied electrical and eletronic technology years ago so I'm not exactly a trained electrician but I can do the job just as well as any of them! Why the hell should I pay stupid sums of money for someone to do exactly what I can do, on property that I own myself and live in just because some 'board' thinks I should! We don't have these kind of regulations stopping us working on our own cars and bikes so why should it apply to our own houses? ____________________ Previous: Aprilia Habana Retro 50cc (beauty), Yamaha SR125 (fell apart), Honda XR125 (nippy little commuter), Honda SLR650 (Geewhizz), Yamaha Diversion 900S (Smoooooth) written off courtesy of a stupid escaped horse.

Electrician is supposed to be well paid when fully qualified, but the college route you need to do
City and guilds level 2
City and guilds level 3
NVQ level 3
Then theres lots of little bits that build up like
AM2
17th edition regs course
and the like.
Expensive right now, but in the future im sure ill feel happy i spent the money. go for it. |
Unfortunly theres alot of so called Electricians about who are,nt quailfed or are incompetent as most employers dont check or dont have a clue about current city&guilds, l come across alot of theses clowns in my line of work though it always happens and always will.
last week l asked a site "Electrician" to look at a faulty fan coil unit.
The Fan coil unit speed controller is faulty, ( l pointed to a burnt PCB transformer) and demostrated 230v supply to transformer and motor plus no 24v supply out from the transformer also show 0-10v analog control signal as ok.
after leaving a so called eletrican to it he comes back to me after 30 mins and tells me theres two phases down (on a single phase motor).....................no mate thats your earth and neutral.
l,ve seen allsorts
overloads set to twice a motor rated current or as high as it would go/ fuses and breakers well over the rating of the load carrying capacity of out going cables/ motors and panels cable entry with no form of gland/ saftey switchs, stops, guards bypassed/ cables trimed down to fit small terminals/ bypassing of HV switching interlocks/ live working when there is no need other than lazyness. plus many many more. ____________________ Past:NRG50,AF1125(x2),NSR125RR,ZZR250,CX500,VFR400,KR1S,ZZR600(x2),CB400N,YZF1000(x2),KH125,Z200,FX400R,CBR954RR(x2)GPZ500S,GT550,VFR750F(x2),RD350N,XR650R,CBR600F,CB250,KDX250,YZF750R,CRM250,400EXC,KLR650,TTR600RE,DR350S,R100GSPD,RGV250,VMAX1200,DL650,KZ750 Present:G650XC,C12,CRF450X,1190ADV |

Slightly scarey i do agree,
the common one we always get told about is farmers using nails for fuses
Or when installing earth rods on TT arrangement, pissing on the rod giving it a better earth fault impedance path
Hopefully i find someone looking to take me on for a few days a week so i can get some more hands on experiance, only ever physically touched three phase once so far and that was with proper isolation etc.
Thats the big issue you really need the employment the apprenticeship is by far the best way to go, now i know quite a bit of the theory but i havnt done that much of the real practical work outside of the college workshop ____________________ Past: '05 Peugeot XPS '99 Aprillia RS125 '94 FZR600R

Ace Card.
Which totally ruins the whole point in a apprentiship. And really gets me p1ss boiling. Do a proper course get the relivent degrees for it.
