I currently have a 2002 cbr600f for touring and trackdays etc.

Am thinking about replacing it in the next few months with something that handles better. When I have a go on the girlfriends 600RR (2003) and get back on mine the handling feels awful in comparison.

So my criteria is as follows:

Must be a sportsbike either 600 or 1000cc (pref jap)
Must be reliable
Must be at least as comfortable as my 2002 CBR600f as I do a lot of touring.
Must handle a lot better than my current bike- a 600rr handles superbly in my opinion.

Does such a bike exist? budget is £2-4k.

Have you ever adjusted the suspension on the CBR?

instead why not spend the cash on a suspension rebuild/set-up?

I have revalved front forks with race springs and an ohlins race rear shock.

It has been setup for my weight by a suspension specialist and handles very well for a cbr600f.

Its just that compared to a CBR600RR the handling is naff. Also I've had it along time and might be nice to upgrade it.

I agree with the above, tweak your suspension right or give it an overhaul and you will probably find a massive difference. I gave mine a tweak the other day and overdid it to the point it was getting too quick and unstable - back off a couple of notches on both ends and it is now perfect!

I think 'comfort' and 'handling' tend to be a bit exclusive from each other. If you want handling in the CBRRR sense, it's gonna be stiff and thus not as comfy as something set up a bit softer.

Or do you just mean you want a modern gnarly sportsbike with a big seat for your fat arse? Wink

You could just buy a 600RR for £2 - £4k, and I think there a very comfy bike, although compared to my old 06 R6, a bed of nails would be comfy Razz

How about a Honda VFR??

My problem is not a fat arse- I wish I did have one. I'm quite tall and skinny (6ft 1) so find most bikes very uncomfy -the seats are too hard, pegs too high, bars too low, etc. If I was short and fat then I could ride most bikes in comfort.

Someone at work told me the 2004 R1 is almost as comfy as a 600f but I'm struggling to believe him...

I think a 600RR is very uncomfortable. If i thought it was comfy I'd probably have one. Dont want a vfr as they are heavy and not a sportsbike, I want something that handles like a proper modern sportsbike but is comfortable enough to tour on.

pah.... what you really want is a KTM950SM then, i'm of a similar cast of dimensions and mine fits me like a glove. (admittedly is not so great for touring due to the lack of a screen for motorway sessions)

Kind of unsure about naked bikes tbh as I do a lot of touring and its nice to tuck behind a fairing at 130 mph when you need to cover some distance abroad Smile

I would have thought a tourer in that price range would be no better handling then your current steed.

Your requirements are basically what the perfect road bike would be, if they made one. Your gonna have to give a little in the comfort department if you want the handling of a Jap 600/1000cc sportsbike, saying that I think most of those sports bikes are more then capable of touring.

How about a 99 Fireblade, if you can find one with few enough miles. Bigger and comfier than the 929/954, still rapid enough to give you a grin and there's loads of parts etc.

As you can tell ffrom my sig, I had a hard time giving them up, if the bike was a toy and only for summer use, I'd have another one tomorrow.

Cheers

How about getting a 600rr and custom making a seat (or buying one) for touring time as it doesn't matter what the bike looks like then!

But that's what a sportsbike is these days - high pegs, low bars, stupid seat, rock hard suspension.

To gain comfort you have to forgoe 'sportiness'. As suggested, old blade, old zx9... basically old litre sports from about 10 years ago when 'sports' didn't mean chin on tank, arse in air, knees round ears quite so much.

What factors do you find limiting in comfort?

I tend to approach such issues from the fact that it's actually usually easier to add comfort than performance.
Adjustable bars and even some custom made peg brackets are going to cost a lot less than than trying to lose weight and add the 'sparkle' a modern sports bike has to an older or heavier one.

I'd be tempted to start with as modern a GSXR750 as I could afford and go from there - or the thou if you want serious ease of riding for distance/touring.

In the end, comfort is in the arse of the rider, so is going to be different for everyone.

Agree 100%.
I sold mine almost a year ago and i still miss it now.
The 06 model is absolutely faultless imo....definately worth considering and you could get a minter for around 4k if you shop around.

How did you fined the build quality? A friend has an 05 Blade and he keeps putting me off buying a Honda because of the shitty build quality..

Did he get it from new/nearly new....or 2nd/3rd hand?Maybe it had been feckled by previous owners.
i`ve never owned an 05 blade so can`t comment on any issues they might`ve had but the 06-RR i had (12 months old with 1000miles on clock) was an absolute dream.Build quality was faultless, engine was faultless, ride and handling was faultless, reliable as clockwork,........it was just a very special bike.
(only thing i didnt like about it was not being able to have both headlights on at the same time....and i was stupid enough to sell it just coz of that,,DUH!!!Rolling Eyes )

If someone offered me a swap right now against my 07 RSVR.....i wouldn`t hesitate to do the deal in a heartbeat.Thats how good it was.

Why not keep your current bike for your touring or upgrade that for something that fills your touring needs and then look at getting a bike for your trackdays, that fills your handling needs. Plus will cover you for any fun days you fancy that don't cover too many miles.
