Does it smoke loads after you've been using it for a while? What 2-stroke oil do you use? The cheap stuff tends to be smokey.

EDIT: that's if it's a 2-stroke Laughing

It is a 2 stroke, and the cheaper oil being smokier is a myth.

basically when i first got the bike which was about a month ago i went to start it a few days after and it wouldnt, the spark plug was clogged with black sut. i cleaned it and it started spot on. i fiddled with the air screw and it made it run fine. how do you set the air screw properly? anyway could the reason its smoking be from all the sutt and oil its built up in the engine and in the exhaust?

Maybe the price of oil isnt the smoke deciding factor, but in my experience certainly different brands of oil have different smoking attributes. Although price doesn't seem be a factor.

Change the air filter would be a start if fiddling with the pilot air screw made it run better. If its blocked then not enough air gets in and the extra vacuum it creates makes the carb dump yet more fuel into the motor.

Also Id suggest getting hold of a manual to see what the correct number of turns it is for the pilot screw.

As far as i can remember the speedy's have a cable operated oil pump towards the rear of the engine can't remember which side, So you could check that the pump is set right and that the cable/ pump operate freely, I could be that the pump is stuck full open or that the cable isn't returning fully with the throttle closed.

Most two strokes will smoke but not realy heavily, unless someone has put oil in the fuel tank as "a bit of extra protection" or accidebtaly put some diesel in, seen that a few times with the Usualy accompanied by "It was running sweet then i filled up and it started smoking and now it won't start", I make a point of smelling the petrol tanks in not running mopeds now just in case.
