Thinking of this as my next car, I know the running costs will be a bit higher than a normal car, but I have friends who will do the mechanics for a drink or two, so its just parts that are going to cost, which I expected.
Needs to be the 2/2.2 diesel as its got much better MPG, I do an average amount of motorway miles and my commute is 40 mins long.
Any big no's about this car? Insurance is only £1,100 which isn't bad seeing as I paid £1,850 last year! Looks extremely cool for a 19 year old

Never thought this was possible, but they are even more rust prone than a late 70's Lancia. Even bodily nice looking examples can have terminally rotten sills and floorpans. Last one I MOT'd a few weeks ago had 4 pages of failures...before it ran out of fuel on the ramp. A Mondeo is a far better car. ____________________ 1996 Kawasaki GPZ1100s,1996 VFR750,1980 BMW R80,1982 Kwak Z250B,1992 ZZR1100C,1996 BMW K1100LT,1994 Kwak ZZR600E,1993 BMW R1100RS,1992 ZZR 600D,1988 BMW K100LT,1998 Aprilia Pegaso 650,1994 Suzuki RF900,1991 Yamaha XJ600, 1988 Honda Dominator,1992 Kwak KMX125,1987 Yamaha RD50MX,1984 Honda MBX50.1984 Honda Superdream 125 |

My lady has one (from new, 54 plate) and still loves it. Fast (petrol) and comfortable whilst looking good. However, even on a low miler, there are electrical niggles. Engine warning light, ABS lights up (sensors need replacing) and the thing takes a literal age to fill as the petrol keeps backing up the filler neck (think it's a faulty purge valve).
If you must have one, do it the old skool way and buy one at the bottom of the pile but with MoT, smoke about in it for a year and then weigh in the 2 tonne (gross) beast to get most of your money back |

Dunno about biggest no, just no is all you need, bloody awful things.
Apart from the litany of faults already mentioned, it just doesn't drive like a Jag, which is no great surprise, as it's only a Mondeo in a cheap suit.
Frankly, for all the problems and crap fuel consumption you have to put up with, you'd be better off smoking a cheap series 3 XJ6 and have a proper luxury car. ____________________ Things get better with age; I'm close to being magnificent........

I thought it was just a Mondeo with a Jaguar badge glued over the top? ____________________ My Flickr

Hi
We have just sold one having had it for 4 years and ~80000 miles. It was an 02 reg car. Ours was a 2.5 petrol so had the 4wd.
It was overall pretty reliable. In the time we had it:-
2 rear suspension links replaced (one on each side).
Hideous number of headlight bulbs. It ate them.
Drivers door lock played up. Known issue where the bar the lock operates slips a bit so it won't operate the lock.
Brake light came on when the clutch was pressed. Full solution is a new pedal box. Easy solution is to take the brake light switch out, glue a thin bit of plastic on top and then put it back in place.
1 lambda probe.
Starter motor played up. Cleaned it up and it was fine. Remarkably easy to get at the starter motor.
Central locking played up. Problem turned out to be the little flap that covers the key hole for the ignition switch. Squirt of lube fixed it.
Engine breather pipe split but cheap and easy to replace.
The big problem with the 2.5 and 3L is the 4wd transfer box. These are meant to be sealed for life and are a pig to top up the oil on.
Ours did have some rust appearing at the bottom of the A posts, and at the MOT last year the mobile mechanic we use said it would need brake pipes doing for this year and that it would be a nightmare job. Such a nightmare that he wasn't that desperate for the money.
On fuel it managed an overall 28mpg. Long motorway journey sitting at the legal limit on the cruise control did give 40mpg.
Decent size boot and comfy. But soggy handling and prone to understeer (but great in snow with the 4wd). The 2.5L engine needs to be revved hard to go well, but it doesn't really make it easy to rev it; basically feels like they made the flywheel about 10 times heavier than it should have been. No fun to drive.
Build quality is OK. I would say better than the BMW 3 series that replaced it.
All the best

Hi Keith,
Thanks for all the info, and from everyone else. I assume some of the parts can be bought as a ford part for less money? Or is it just the engine that's from the mondeo?
I've heard about the reliability issues, however I've had a few people mention that they upped their build quality on the later models, hopefully 07+ would fall into that category.
Nothing else really comes close to the jag for the sort of money I've got, all 320/330d bmw's are £1600+ to insure and I really don't think it's worth the extra money
Fully open to suggestions however. ____________________ Malaguti F12 Phantom-Dead, Suzuki AY50- Dead, NRG power DD LQ, CBR125.

Well I'd be tempted to stretch my budget up to 8K if the right S class came my way, but I'd rather not, insurance then gets close to £1,650.
Sorta liked the Jag because it's a bit quirky in a sense that hardly any 18/19 year olds would drive one as it's an old mans car.
Saabs I've looked at, they are without a doubt the better car, but not the look I want ____________________ Malaguti F12 Phantom-Dead, Suzuki AY50- Dead, NRG power DD LQ, CBR125.

I've got one, as per bamt pointed out it's not quite a Mondeo with badge sticky taped over, it's more of a bastard child of ford/jag and that is the way it feels too, the interior is very reminiscent of the father in laws XJ but has the odd sprinkle of general motors here and there, when you are driving the feel is close to Jag, my dad and brother have both had the mondeos of the same age so between the 3 cars i've been able to make out the similarities/differences.
Mines the 2.0 D, 2004, ala: https://www.parts-specs.com/photos/0299329-Jaguar-X-Type-2.2D-Sport-2005.jpg
I bought it with 131k and now has 142, in that time the power steering pump went a couple of weeks ago, that's it really - it was well looked after by previous owner who was the type you want to buy a car from, he got it from a Jag garage and it has very detailed documentation and maintenance history, cosmetically sound and the engine itself is solid and hasn't missed a beat.
It may not be a pure bread, but most people don't know the history of the line so the reaction os always "nice car" or "must be doing well to have a Jag" despite the fact I paid a shade under £2k which puts it squarely amongst the competitors, reliability wise I guess a few more miles are needed to get the whole picture although browsing cars the other day for someone the first 6 results for the diesel X types were examples with 190-260k and they weren't on for peanuts either, that's a good indicator of lifespan and is similar to the likes of superbs, various bm's/mercs and the odd volvo.
It's my favourite car to date to drive, I've had an 2007 passat that had the gearbox go in a week (repaired under warranty obviously but still) a 2006 Accord that had to go in for manifold recall (good job they honoured it otherwise that would have costed) and an 04 3 series bm which was better but had the standard sensor warning lights telling you the sensor has failed.
When looking for cars just before the X type I looked at a few 9'3's, in the end I didn't like the build quality, seals/rubber bits and paint tended to perish/rub off all over the shop and the examples I saw in the same price bracket just weren't any where near as tidy.
For a 19 y/o i'd say it's a nice car to have, with the right trim it's a decent looker although you'd have to be ready for the mondeo jeers from car folk!
That all being said if I had £5k plus in my pocket I wouldn't even consider it, the money would be spent on the 2.7D XJ! ____________________ Past -Honda qr50 | 2004 Peugeot Tkr s 50| | 1996 Yamaha XJ600s Diversion|| 2005|Kawasaki Z750s | | 2006 Yamaha FZ6 Fazer |
