Are DID chain's really that superior?

I'm in desperate need of a new chain, but money is tight at the moment, and just looking at a chain, the DID X-ring is £20 more expensive than a TSubaki X-ring.

Is it worth the extra £20?

Anyone had experience with either?

I've run DID chains and noticed no difference to any other big name chain maker.

The only brand I've ever heard of any issues with is Triple S, you may get better longevity with the more expensive chain but if money is tight then either would suffice.

I've always used TSubaki X-ring chains and also fitted them to mates bikes, never had any problems with them at all.

I've had Tsubakis in the past. No difference with one and a DID, apart from the free £20 beer token that comes with each purchase.

ive used a few - Vortex, Ts, DID to name 3..
Again, the only one ive heard of trouble with, was Tripple S. My friend snapped 2 within the space of a week on his Firestorm (first replaced by bike shop) and the second time it made a lovely smash in his engine!

The two D.I.D chains I've had have been better than any others I've used prior. I'd say yes.

Um...how do you rate a chain?

Whether it breaks or not?

How many times you need to adjust it?

How much adjustment it needs, stretch etc. Basically how much abuse it takes.

Not really an issue now as I use a scottoiler.

Edd, I'll let you know about the Regina Chain when i've put a few thousand miles on it. My bike is due in for new C&S after it's slapping like a cock on a flappy labia!

I was trying to make a choice between Tsubaki Alpha X-rings, DID VZ Xrings and the Regina Z-Ring set. AFAM were WAAAY to expensive for my liking. Suffice to say, the place were willing to do me a set of brembo rear pads + Regina C&S + fitting for £200 (would do it myself but have neither the tools nor time).

Either way, all the brands have been used by major race teams so hopefully their experience will transfer onto the road. I'm expecting 20k miles on ANY X-ring chains.

Avoid IRIS. Despite constant lubrication and cleaning (every 2 weeks), they get tightspots notoriously easily. I've never seemed to get more than 8k miles out of a set of IRIS, both on the blade and on the 6R!

My DID chain has only ever got adjusted when the back wheel needs to come for what ever reason. The chain has outlasted my front sprocket, I have just changed the front sprocket, I dunno what is going to happen with everything else.. (i.e. the chain and rear sprocket)(and the fact that you are meant to change everything together).

I've ordered, got an X-ring Tsubaki and a front renthal sprocket for £83 which I think is pretty resonable!

Just a quick question on fitting....

I know when you swap the chain, the easiest way is to link the old one to the new, then spin it round so it draws the new chain through.....

How do you do this if you are changing both sprockets?

I am also doing the chain in the pikeys way - angle grind the rivet, screwdriver to prise open. Then molegrips and a hammer to rivet the new chain on!

If you're changing both sprockets you'll have enough stripped off the bike to feed the new chain round by hand. This would also be a good opportunity to get a spray-bottle of degreaser and clean all the gunge from behind the sprocket cover.

All the top x ring chains have been quite good on my prevoius bikes, l would never touch IRIS chains after a bran new IRIS O-ring chain snapping and punching a hole through the crank case of my NC24 after 80 miles.

DID chains are good and worth paying a bit extra for. But then are Tsubaki chains. How much extra probably depends on the particular chains.

have been using D.I.D chains on 2 of my bikes...one dual sport and a road bike...much better chain life....still haven't adjusted a bit after 8 mnths of use
