Hi guys, I'm looking to do my A2 in January, I rang my local riding school and they said that I need to do my theory test first, at around £30 odd, and then once that is done they offer a 4 day intensive course, at the end of which you will have a full A2 licence for £600 all in, test fees the lot ect.
I already have a valid CBT
Does this sound a good deal ? bearing in mind that there lessons are £70 for 2 hours.
(is there anything else I should be aware of?)

Jamie.

Sounds about right for DAS so A2 should be the same ball park?

Hiya,
My local school offers 3 days training and test fees for £490 for A2, £520 for DAS- so seems about right with the extra day Smile
Hope you enjoy your training, good luck with your theory test Smile Thumbs Up

Hi, noticed you've had your CBT for a year, so if you've been riding regularly why not DIY. Maybe a couple of lessons.

hadn't thought about it really, is it easy enough to get your self through a test ?
I have been riding for nearly 10 months , and have done 10,500 miles in this time, bound too of picked up a fair few bad habits by now ?

After 25yrs of cage driving i'd picked up about every bad road habit you could think of. And after 4yrs of riding a bike (fear of test and apathy led to 2 CBTs) i'd picked up some bad habits. So i got a couple of books and re-learnt and then practised. Whilst doing this i booked my theory online.
I had a tight schedule as my 2nd CBT was about to expire (aswell as my tax MOT and insurance on the CG)
Theory passed and test booked.
3wks later i'd passed my A2
If i could've afforded a lesson or two i would've.

I've got mine for £560 for four days (inc test and theory - already passed theory though). Seems about average to be fair. Smile

Don't want to hijack the thread or anything but I'm interested to know what kind of bad habits you found that you had picked up Howling Terror? I've been riding more than one and half years now on my CBT and I probably have some bad habits by know. I'm don't think I'm dangerous or anything, just maybe getting lazy.

And if I had £600 laying around I would definitely take it up Thumbs Up

Bad riding habits were(and some have returned)
Not checking mirrors when going from 30-40 zone
Not doing enough lifesavers really was my thing.
Getting my lane postioning better when approaching all junction types, and actually 'going around' a roundabout.
Forgetting most of the highway code signs (Blue circles and stopping distances FFS)
there are more but that'd be telling

Have you been riding regularly? If so you might find that 4 days will be too much really. I had only ridden on the roads to do my cbt but found the third day was pretty much wasted lol

I would certainly recommend some training though, module one you could probably pass without training as its all down to clutch control of the bike (but do all of your head checks!) but module two is a bit more, well, intensive. As previously said, its woth checking that you havent got any bad habits.

Good luck!! Thumbs Up

I paid £140 a day for 3 days on a shed of a CG then £150 for both tests, baring in mind that I was using the instrutors bike and taking up his time.

I failed mod 1 on the emergency stop as the brakes were diobolical. He then wanted me to re-book with him on his bike, I went out and borrowerd money for a CBR125 off my Dad I then went and booked mod1 and passed, examiner was very pleased, now waiting to do mod2.

My A2 cost £280 for two days training + both tests but I did use my own bike.

A 4 day DAS course takes someone from never having ridden a bike before to passing their test, so you shouldn't need 4 days of training.

Doing the test without any lessons is easy enough, look through the DSA book to find out exactly what it is the examiners are looking for, practice practice and then practice some more, if you fail the test then that will tell you what you need to practice some more, repeat until you pass.. The £600 for training would buy you a lot of attempts at doing the test. Smile

£35 per hour seems to going rate at the moment.

I paid around the ballpark of £600 for my A1 test in November last year. I don't know how things compare now because the test is across two modules.

Good Luck! Thumbs Up

I hope you are going to Probike in Queensferry and not Arrow in Chester. Or are you doing it elsewhere?

Jamie, where abouts are you from? I live near enough in Ruthin.

I did my CBT with those at A & D, but went for training in Oswestry, to put it blunt they were crap. I wish I'd gone with those near A & D now.

There are of course exceptions to every rule, but following the change in test, most of our courses are now running at 5 - 6 days to go from newbie to DAS pass as there's so much more to fit in...

For someone that has covered 10500 miles though, for an A2 pass three days maximum should suffice - you could look into the option of doing it yourself though.

DSA has a series of videos on Youtube to give you an idea of what to expect for Mod 1. I would certainly recommend getting at least one days formal training with an instructor to get an idea of what the examiner's looking for re: Mod 2.

Good luck!

Been chatting with the guys based at Bill smiths in chester today. There lessons, using your own bike are £20 per hour.
My theory is booked for this week end. They suggested I just Book my mod 1 and have a go at it, once I get my mod one they said that possibly just 4 hours worth of lessons, on the actual test routes in chester, should be enough to get the average rider though mod 2.
What are you opinions on this ?
Break down of figures:

Theory test fee £30
Mod 1 Test fee £10
Mod 2 Test fee £75
4 hours of lessons £80

So a total of £195 for an A2 licence

Regards, Jamie

Jamie, I did my mod 1 and mod 2 "DIY" style, used my own bike, turned out really good, failed mod 1 1st time but re-took 2 weeks later, so £20.. Then did mod 2 and passed.. £70
Did all the training with a mate, his dads a bike instructor...so got pretty mucha list of what they looked for and went through it at the price of a few beers..£10
Then obviously the theory.

Its the best/cheapest way imo..
