whenever i start up my bike in the morning - it is very very smoky. There is quite a noticeable cloud of smoke that it has produced by the time i start up my bike, put my gloves and helmet on and ride away. Its much worse now that its started to get cold.
The amount of smoke being produced nearly disappears by the time i get to the end of the road though.
what could be causing so much smoke

Is it definitely smoke and not condensation? Is is blue-ish smoke?

If it's smoke then it could be the valve stem seals leaking over night then the oil burning off as you run the bike.

Indeed, big smoke on startup, but quickly clearing is valve stems. Continual smoking is generally rings (but possibly a totally split seal).

You will need a valve spring compressor to replace the stem seal/s.

How much oil are you using after say 100 miles?
Does it also smoke in the evening?

@Ariel - usually have to top up with oil every month so 300-400miles maybe. So yes it is using more than expected. It is a Yamaha though and an older style divvy at that which has the stupid oil level indicator which is shall well say 'slightly' sensitive and the light pops up for absolutely anything except perfect oil level.
It only smokes on startup for the first few hundred yards or so and then clears up. Doesn't smoke when it is warm. (At least not enough for me to notice on quick inspection)

@joe -Yes am 99% sure it is smoke and not condensation. It smells oily and has a slight blue tint to it

@bikerdudematt - has been doing this for a while, but has become a lot more noticeable since it has turned cold. In the warmer weather it was hardly noticeable.

Haven't had any running problems with the bike as of yet. Still seems smooth with no power loss so i ruled out rings and kind of just left the problem to one side for a couple of months but now it is bugging me and want to sort it

cheers for the help so far

I'm with Joe on this one. Valve stem oil seals.

All your symptoms point to this.

Thumbs Up

okay
how much of a job is this going to be. i know its going to be very fiddly and tedious.
also how serious is this as a problem. Is it going to make a huge difference if left for a couple of weeks or is it something that needs to be sorted immediately. as i don't have access to one of the valve spring compressors at my current house. i am fairly confident that my dad has one but it is for a car so am not sure if it will fit

I have used car one in the past, with use of bits of metal and wood, you can make it work on a bike head, but to be honest, you are better off getting the correct tool or taking the head to a bike shop and paying for them to swap them (the labour is probably about the same as a tool??).

As for leaving it for a little while, as long as you keep the oil topped up, then yep, it'll 'keep' Thumbs Up

I'm on my second divvy.
Both of mine smoke like a 2 stroke from cold. I wouldn't worry about it.
I did 20k last year on my old one without servicing it once absolutely ragged the tits off it but then the coils went at 60k.
Needed a lot of work for the mot so just bought a new one.
