I've never really done any massive rides on the CG, the longest being June 2nd 2008 when I turned 17, I did 200 miles going places in East Anglia. I'm happy enough going to Yarmouth 50 miles away in one go, so am planning to take a fortnight off work to go touring Smile I'll be taking 'the scenic route' because I'm on L plates still, but on such a slow bike it'll mean I can enjoy the route more.

My initial plan is to go from IP24 3TJ (Elveden, Norfolk) all the way up to John O' Groats, then down to Lands End, then back up to home. I'll be spreading the journey out and just taking things as I feel like it. I'm expecting the bike to be fine, despite the engine smoking a bit, but will take spares, just in case. Below is a list of info on the bike (like it's state of repair) my luggage list etc

Bike;
1990 Honda CG125 BR-J
~40,000miles
500 mile old chain and sprockets
been smoking for the last 2000 miles
just serviced it and have to refit the top box

Luggage;
sleeping bag
tent
food and drink
pair of inner tubes and a puncture repair kit
a complete set of light bulbs
fuses
a pair of levers
a spare chain
due to the smoky top end, ill take a cylinder, piston and gasket set
oil
tool kit, comprising; spanner set, mole grips, adjustable spanner(s), socket set, screwdriver set, cable ties and duck tape.
speedo cable
front brake cable

can anyone recommend any good places to see on the way, bearing in mind i can't use motorways. also if anyone wants to meet up on the way then let me know Very Happy Thumbs Up

When are you planning on doing this? If I'm free I'd love to come along for the ride. I've done many, many 200 / 400 mile trips on my CG now but this sounds like a great challenege Thumbs Up My CG is a 2004 model so it ought to be able to handle it without problems (I would hope!).

Im not sure, im going to borrow sat nav and tell it to avoid motorways and see where i go, maybe take a road map and de-tour as and when i feel like it, it really is just to get away from the stresses and strains of day to day life at home if you get me Smile

Alexio, I'm going to book some time off work, but I'm planning on the first 2 weeks of October, maybe leave on the 30th september and aim to get back around mid october, i want to use the full 2 weeks tbh. I'm expecting the whole trip to cost around £3-400 with petrol and food etc but thats just because the whole lot will be around 1700 miles

Ah the money probably wouldn't be a problem but the timing is, that's fairly short notice for me. Work isn't a problem but I'm still a part time student who is taking a bit longer to get my degree (but it's nice going slowly and being relaxed about it).

It's a shame but I do have a friend I promised that I would visit near the end of October when I do have some free time. They live in Ireland so that should give me a good fix of an adventure Cool

awesome, i know its short notice, but tbh this is something i could do at any time, ive been thinking about it for ages, but never really put those thought into action, im going to see if i can get the time off work, if i can then im laughing.

Also if anyone can think of anything I'll need then please feel free to let me know, any advice is very much appreciated Smile

Just the most direct route avoiding motorways is nearly 2000 miles (Google route); adding sight seeing and detours, you should plan on closer to 2500. That makes about 180 miles a day, so only riding for about 4 hours. Bike should be fine, but your arse might appreciate a day off here and there Smile

If you've got a tankbag with a clear map pocket on top, I'd just plan that day's rough route on a notepad and have that showing, rather than having a satnav tell you where and when to turn. Or write it on the tank using a drywipe pen Smile

You haven't mentioned what personal effects you'll be taking, so I might be stating the obvious, but on top of clothing/personal hygiene/cooking equipment you need to consider stuff like torches (I prefer the LED headband types) and how the satnav is going to be charged (as well as the phone/camera/mp3 player/gameboy/whatever). I'd add a book to the list too.

If you haven't got it already, the only extra thing I'd sort out is a roadside recovery that'll take you and your bike home if anything goes tits up.

On the other hand, my mate always used to say that if you have a credit card and a toothbrush, you don't need to pack anything else Smile

The beach at Sennen Cove is lovely, just like being abroad except the sea is a bit colder. The water is also crystal clear. It's about 1 mile away from Lands End.

Brilliant! thats EXACTLY the sort of thing I want to detour to! cheers, as for all the personal effects, they'll be in the tank bag, I'll take a change of clothes, and use a laundry or something to clean the spare set.

My mum got me a bag with one of those solar panels and transformers, it has a nokia attachment so i can charge my phone Smile I've reviewed the route, and it seems i was thinking of a europe trip i planned for after i passed my test that was 1700 miles all round. this one is 1950 Shocked

Here's my basic route plan.
Leave IP24 3TJ and head north, passing through Hull, then Hartlepool, up through Edinburgh and on to John O' Groats. This is around 670 miles, which I should be able to cover over 2 days. I'll most probably take alternate routes, and stop and take pictures, I just need to find somewhere to set up camp.

The next leg is the long one, John O' Groats to Land's end down the West side of the country, passing through Glasgow, Preston and Bristol. It will be taken over 3 or 4 days and will cover over 870 miles.

The last part of the journey is Land's End to home, with a definate stay in Plymouth to see Great Nana and Grandads grave. I'll then move on to Exeter, Portsmouth, Brighton and then home, this will cover 465 miles, a total journey of just over 2000 miles Smile

the initial plan was leave on september 30th and be away for about a fortnight. but unfortunately someone at work wants the same time off as they've just bought a new house and want to move in, so im knocking it back a bit and will most likely leave around the 20th of october (which means ill catch payday if i run out of cash)

I'd be happy to meet fellow members on the way, just need a postcode so i can factor in a detour Thumbs Up

i think the cg is the best bike to go on a tour with!you know it will always get you there!

The only problem i see with touring on a cg is that its not very good at carrying lots of extra weight!

My old x reg cg was so good but when i loaded her up with lots of extra weight when my friend needed a hand moving she didnt like it one bit lol

Keep your extra weight down!get a light tent and sleeping bag!

My xr has the same engine the newer Cg's but it seems to deal with extra weight a lot better then my cg did!

Have you loaded up your bike with all your gear for a test run?

Mate sounds like a brilliant idea. If your going john o'groats then your going to love it on your bike. I've just come back from a tour around Scotland and it was brilliant.

Proper windy roads everywhere!!

my manageress is a legend (also a biker funnily enough) and has actually told me to go! so it's back on for the 30th of september, ive not done any test runs yet, but basically ive got a small tank bag, a rucksack and a set of panniers, so not alot of extra weigfht to carry, just tools, clothes and food in the 'rear' storage and a camping stove and bathroom kit etc in the tank bag. was considering putting the top box back on, but have decided its a bit bulky and heavy to carry XD

If you are planning on passing through Hull and starting from Suffolk, chances are you'll be passing through Lincs. If you fancy it I will meet up with you for part of the ride?

As for things to do in Lincolnshire, there are some interesting things to see in Lincoln (Cathedral, castle etc).

Skegness is completely overrated unless you want to empty your money into bandits, taste microwave food or play arcade games.

30th September is a Wednesday. There is a busy bike night at Willingham Woods on Weds. There are lovely roads for miles around Thumbs Up.

I can probably think of quite a few cool, unusual things to do around here so if you're stuck for things to do pick my brains and I should be able to conjure up something.

sounds like an adventure!! Like others have said the seat will be the biggest problem, try making a small fleece pad with just elastic to go under the seat and put it off and on during the trip, make sure you have something waterproof to store it in.

When I had 125s I never went massive distances but my mates used to manage to trek the country on theirs and had a great time.
