Surprised
How interchangeable are rear shocks? Assuming from the same manufacturer. I know a lot of SV owners tend to swap and change shocks from other bikes.
I want to freshen up my rear (waits for jokes). Basically my standard shock has covered 30k and has an uprated spring (possibly k tech) which is way too hard for my weight. There may as well be a brick in its place.
Ive been looking at newish GSXR1000 (k7 k8) shocks which can be picked up for around £100.
Id love to get a purpose built hagon of something similar but afraid the funds dont stretch that far.
So as long as the mounting width at top and bottom are the same and the bolt holes the same diameter could I just bolt one in place?

Any experiences with this or similar would be good to hear
Thumbs Up

ZX6R - (2000) I think the usual upgrades for sv's are zx6r, zx10r and gsxr1000 shocks so thinking there must be some common sizing with these models Thinking

i dont know anything about kwaks.
is there no adjustment on your shock?
if its an uprated spring then maybe get a standard one to try.

yep fully adjustable and all been backed off to supersoft settings, still rides like a log.
I considered a standard spring but im not gonna waste time fitting a new spring to a shock with 30k on it.
Also, Im not sure the standard spring would be much better, supposed to be pretty stiff as standard.
Im toying with getting a gsxr750 or 1000 shock from ebay - need to confirm dimensions first tho.

Hi

There is some interchangability, but not always. Sometimes even slightly different versions of the same bike have shocks that cannot be interchanged (TZR250 for example).

Spring rate, damping rates, length, top and bottom mount types and sizes are the basics. After that you get onto whether remote reserviors fit, etc.

All the best

Keith

Strange as i heard these were sprung softer...

Shock on mine has done 47k, might just be the fact ive had it a year and not bothered sorting the preload and static sag on it Embarassed

Wouldn't it be easier to send the shock off for a rebuild? Get it set up to your riding style and weight? Its £90 on ebay, just like getting a new shock I'm led to believe...

True, just a bit skeptical as to how 'tuneable' a standard shock and spring are. Could be worth a bash at less than a £100 though

I think pretty much any shock can be modified to fit if it doesnt already.
For example, i replaced the standard shock in my cagiva mito that had a saddle and eyelet fitment for a ducati 916 biposto rear shock with 2 eyelets. All i needed to do was make a bracket and weld it on.
