Why, can anyone tell me, is it that cars / vans when in the outside lane of the motorway with an empty lane to their left do not move over?

Don't get me wrong I dont tailgate them and only expect them to move if they have an empty lane next to them. I just hang back and to the right of the lane, if no movement after a couple of mins then a couple of flashes with the full beam, with my right indicator on to try to get the message through. Still they stay where they are.

I couldn't believe it on the M1 last night first a women in a fiesta with an absolute clear road next to her completely ignored all my polite requests to move over, leaving me with no choice but to sit behind her for the remainder of my journey or undertake. Then further up the motorway exactly the same thing with another (van this time - not a white builders one, a quite posh silver one with blacked out windows).

What is the problem with these people? Their driving causes congestion and frustration and leaves drivers / bikers with little choice but to undertake (which I really try to avoid unless filtering). I just don't understand what they get out of it.

This is one of my biggest pet hates of all time. We would not need anymore new roads or have half the congestion we do, if people just used the roads correctly. Most people use their car like they would their washing machine, they have as much empathy with the car as they do a fridge.

It's bizarre, and it's something i've never understood.
I think a lot of it is down to the number of 'road captains' we seem to breed in this country - 'I'm in the outside lane, i'm doing 70, therefore no-one should be able to overtake me because they are BREAKING THE LAW!!one!!!'.
The other ones i struggle with are the Middle Lane Hoggers - as soon as they join a motorway they must move into the middle lane as quickly as they can, regardless of whether they actually need to. They then will sit in the middle lane until they reach their exit.
I encountered one of these late on Friday night on the M11 - he joined a little way in front of me, then straight away was into MLH mode and crossed into the middle lane. There was no visible traffic in the inside lane, there was nothing for him to overtake, there was absolutely no need for him to do it.
As i was in lane 1, it meant i had to cross into lane 3, overtake him, and then return to lane 1 - more than doubling the number of observations and lane changes i had to carry out.
My usual method of dealing with lane hoggers is to undertake with my left hand on the horn, and the right hand giving 'the finger' at the window.

Many people still see lane 1 as the slow lane, most people don't want to be seen as slow, lane 3+ as the fast lane for the idiot speeders and they're not one of them, lane 2 is the safe lane. many people have never been taught how to use the motorways, they may have done the theory years ago, or used dual carriage ways, but then got scared the first few times on an actual motorway and now go on in fear. Same with those people who stay in lane 1 and do not make progress staying at 50-60mph in a car that is more than capable of doing 70mph, some use the eco friendly excuse, but that is all it really is, an excuse.

Yet more evidence of the need to retrain and test road users every 5 or so years.

I know I shouldn't, but if I ever see a MHL, I undertake and give them a puzzled look as I go past!

Sometimes it works and they pull back into the left lane.

Thumbs Up

As said there is no formal training for motorway driving. I cringe at times watching clueless chimps trying to join the motorway and rapidly running out of lane whilst they accelerate and brake with no technique other than crossed fingers.

I normally undertake and cut in really close to the offside front hopefully that will wake them up abit. I know it is stupid, but it makes me feel better Laughing

If taught how to use slip roads correctly while learning to ride/drive and then if they do things like the Pass Plus scheme most of the issues will be dealt with. But people want to pass their tests in as short a time as possible, and when they do pass they have no self control or no one next to them telling them what is right or wrong and we end up with the roads we have now.

Is it possible to fit quadrouple air horns to a GSXR? Also what about some seachlights. Actually no, where can I get dual machine guns?

A mate suggested I should open their back door as I go past Very Happy

I heard one explanation from a MLH was that it saved him having to give way to people joining the motorway. If he'd been in the LHL he'd have to 'constantly' pull into the ML to let these people in.

He was one of those road captains though because he also said he'd be doing seventy (by his ordinary but modern speedo which cannot be wrong) and if anyone wanted past they'd be breaking the law so basically shouldn't.

He was also speaking on teh Jeremy Vine show so should probably be bound with gaffa tape then thrashed until dead with a copy of the Daily Mail.

I would follow these people home, break into their house while they sleep, rape their wimmin-folk (probably the men folk too for good measure) after which, I'd force the errant driver to watch while I killed his entire family to create an obscene enactment of an orgey redolent of hitherto unexplored depths of vulgarity and vitiation....

But lifes to short.

They are annoying and lane discipline is sorely lacking, but it's just another thing to get over and then get on with life.

I'll overtake using the inner lanes if I think it's safe and appropriate, but on a bike they're not much of an issue. I think they're a bigger problem to other road users and cause a considerable amount of congestion.

I rhetorically said to my mate the other night after my ride home

"...why are there so many cunts on the road?"

To which he replied

"There's nothing you can do about it mate, there just are, that's all"

On an empty motorway I sit in the middle lane, the left hand lane is far too bouncy.

Just sitting in the middle lane comes under driving without due car and attention, which is rather more serious than speeding.

Perhaps the road captains should report themselves.

All the best

I think its lazyness....

They sit in he middle because the chances are something in the slow lane will come up and need overtaking.

I do exactly the same thing. Sometimes it feels a bit cunty, but I get over it. Mr. Green Dunno what I'll do when I encounter it on a bike.

Why? If you're on lane 1, you can drive past him, even if he's on lane 2 but moving more slowly. It's not classified as undertaking.

Hi

Undertaking is not a specific offence (hasn't been for getting on for 40 years).

As such there is nothing directly illegal about undertaking. However if done without care then you open yourself up to a driving without due care and attention charge.

All the best

Keith

Here a tip I got from a Police rider. Line your headlight up with their offside mirror and move up to the 1/2 to1 sec position. Then drop back and repeat as necessary. It fairly effective but Moron man is immune so just undertake the fucker if its safe Thumbs Up
