evening people,I am after abit of advice I have stripped my forks and ordered some fork seals off ebay, they come yesterday and I attempted to fit them,I tried to knock them in and totally F***ed them up I am wondering weather they were the correct seals I have totally bent the seals now anyway so have little chance of getting my money back on them lol my question is how tight should they be going in I would of thought knocking them in with a suitable size socket would be enough as they are held in place with a metal snap ring.Smile

before you put them in you must clean all the corrossion from the inner fork where the seal fits .The steel holding circlips rust as water gets in and sits above the seals. This in turn rots the ally where the seals fit .Externally you see rot at the top of the tube.

Clean the circlips and coat with a little grease . use a blunt small screwdriver to gently lift the corrosion off where the seals fit , use a little bit of fine sand paper on the seal slot if needed and remember to wash the bottom tube out with petrol or parrafin before assembly .

Once they are ready to go in , lightly grease the slots and the seal outer and gently and evenly tap the seals down closed face up (check your model)with a socket and mallet or peice of wood using a thick rag between the socket and seal so the seal dos'nt tear .Tap it down evenly and keep your eye on the circlip slot. Once its past this then STOP , it's in enough.

HANDY TIMESAVING HINT>>>>>>> many smaller forks can be removed without taking the legs off the bike by undoing the bottom allen key from the lower fork leg but you must raise the front at least a few inches.

UNFASHIONABLEMONEY/TIMESAVING HANDY HINT>>>>> fork gaitors will make the seals last twice as long but check and clean under the rubbers.
