Result: - Shoei have come to the party. I was asking for a liner replacement, they have offered me a brand new helmet. It's not one of the latest, greatest, and i think a couple years old - however given the circumstances i think they've been more than fair with this offer...
So no more ranting....thanks to those that supported me and to those that had nothing to do but take a few shots...well....

Cheers
Si.

Don't helmets only have a shelf life of something like 4 years anyway, as general ageing of materials, the elements/UV from the sun etc will weaken them?

I've got a Shoei TXR which I've had since 1998. I had to replace the visor a while back, but the lining is still fine. It cost £90 new (or about $170). Anyone who spends around six hundred quid on a lid deserves to have it fall to bits, IMHO Wink

Helmet makers might want people to believe that. But if a lid hasn't been involved in an impact, the shell will still comfortably protect your head. In my days riding mopeds round the local tracks, I had an ancient Bieffe which was a mass of scratches and scrapes and yet it still did the job when I came off such beasts as the Honda Camino, Tomos Automatik and Raliegh Runabout.

While its not good that the foam if falling apart.

You do have to wonder if the poster has been using any kind of hair products, such as gell etc which may effect the stability of the foam lining.

I've had a number of Arai and AGV over the years, worn in the sub-tropics and UK, with gel and other hair-products, even soaked inside by a typhoon, and have never had such a problem.

This kind of thing happens, but when the manufacturer basically says "fvck you" it's time to boycott them, permanently.

But some of the more modern one's may have more aggressive active ingredients, or the material they use does not like certain chemicals.

Perhaps it would be a interesting test on some old helmets to see how the lining reacts to certain hair products. Or should at least be included in the safety tests.

The answer he got was not good, they should have at least asked to see the helmet to see if it was in anyway a batch fault on the linings.

One thing for sure i will not be spending that much on a helmet.

Do you leave your helmet on top of the petrol tank when you take it off?

I've heard of something similar happening where fuel vapour vents through the filler cap in hot weather and takes out the lining (foam + petrol don't mix).

There is also a known issue (but not necessarily known why) where some peoples sweat destroys neoprene really rapidly. High-end foam may well be neoprene based. I have one mate who can't wear a normal wetsuit because of this.

Because it offends my tightwad sensibilities Wink And that vid proves that large outlay doesn't guarantee quality. Still, each to their own.

When i had my shoei multitec and lost weight i thought it was strange that even with the largest pads it would still not fit as i doubt your head gets that big, so i went into a motorcycle accesory shop and tried another xl multitec on and it fitted spot on but when i put mine on i could get my hand up the front, this was verified by a shoei trained instore technician who said there was somthing not right with the helmet, when i put this too feridax they said it was sized wrong when i bought it, but when i said the same size off the shelf fits, they then said it was probably too small when i bought it and it had compressed the insides, it had only been worn for an hour a day for 2 months, i thought ffs get your story right and make up your mind . So at this point i realized feridax didnt want to know and were happy to stiff me, the helmet was like new not a mark on it, so i ebayed it and a chap came tried it on and was happy, he bought it. I replaced it with a HJC FG-15 which is coming up for 4 months of daily use and still fits like the day i bought it good and snug.
Feridax are a waste of time, and the worst part is i e-mailed Shoei Europe and complained , they coudnt even be arsed to reply.
So i will never buy Shoei again or anything Feridax have dealings with.

On that basis, it'd be best for everyone to post every post in every section, which would then make the whole concept redundant Smile.

If you'd like people to be aware of an issue, I suggest you find a better medium than youtube, which has such a low incidence of actually useful content that many won't bother to click your link anyway.

Also, I'm at work and can't watch youtube vids without getting earache from the boss, so a textual description would have helped as well.

How many companies are going to give a shit that a 3 years old product is damaged. Especially a disposable item.

I can't see an anti Shoei crusade working tbh. Karma

I guess that's the Shoei range topper, an X-Spirit. Roughyl how many miles have you done in it??

I understand that after 3 years it's not great, but if you've done 300,000 miles, then that's far better than if you've only got 2,000 miles worth of use out of it.

Being a trainer I would suspect you're doing big miles, so a harder user of kit than "average". Not saying that it's ok, or that Shoei are right to ignore the problem. More curious than anything.

The guy has had 12 lids in 20 years but whines about a 3 year old lid? I would have liked to see the bit of paper before he slapped the top of it. It looks like he has pulled and prodded the lining making it worse as he has done so.
My shoei is 4 years old and fits better now than when I first got it, I keep all my old lids and have tried them on, they don't feel half as good as my Shoei. I've been riding for 26 years and only had 6 lids, none have fallen apart. looks like user abuse to me.

I,ve got the same helmet and have owned it for over 3 years using it daily and for a number of long tours washing it a few times a year in the shower and the lining is fine. Confused

Yea, just a note I've never had a problem with fit of Shoei's deteriorating. They are my favourite brand.
After a few years of cheap helmets some years ago, it was putting my old Shoei back on that me realise I needed to cough up a bit more as despite the exterior looking completely knackered, it still fitted really well.
I'm happy to fairly regularly (got through a few thanks to bike racing) buy Raid's and they consistently fit me well despite the age.
