I want to change the oil on a car, easy enough, the issue is that the car is rather low about 9 inches, no way I'd be able to squeeze under that.

I also most definately do not want to use a car jack on the said car as I've had bikes fall off jacks and a 150 kilo bike is dangerous enough never mind a 2 ton car which would probably kill me. Though I have thought of putting tyres and wooden blocks in the space that the jack creates so if it does fall off the jack it will harmlessly be wedged up by the wooden blocks, though it still feels dodgy to me.

Ontop of this I don't want to be spending £50 on some stands or ramps which will be used once.

My only thought is to drive the car to somewhere with a high kerb and park with the passenger side wheels on the kerb and the other wheels on the road giving me some decent access. However I'm not sure the cops would like this very much.

BCF what are your solutions to this?

Thanks.

Hi

I have used the curb like that (but for changing an exhaust father than oil). Trouble with changing oil like that is that the old oil will go to one side of the sump, leaving a fair amount in there when you drain it.

However 9" is a fair amount of space to change the oil. It is more space than we have under the Maserati (about 6" clearance) when it is over the pit with boards on it (gives another couple of inches between the garage floor and the board covering the pit), which is what I tend to use to change the oil. You should easily be able to slide a washing up bowl under the sump if it is that high, and have space to undo the sump plug. No real need to crawl fully under the car.

If you need a bit more clearance then get a couple of small planks of wood and drive the front wheels onto those.

All the best

Keith

Axle stands should be a tenner or less I'd have thought - they had two for a fiver in my local Wickes a couple of months ago.

Or ask on your local freecycle group.

Can be helpful for some bike things as well, so not a bad thing to have around.

Jack it up one corner at a time and stick a concrete block under each wheel.

Or dig a hole to lie in and park the car over it?

Or a pair of car ramps for £30 on ebay?

EDIT: I paid a fiver for a pair of axle stands at my local car boot sale.

I would get something solid under either the wheels or part of the frame that will take the weight.

Or just jack up enough that lifts it, but leaves the wheels on the ground.

Failing that take a trip to a garage that does cheap oil and filter changes..

If you havn`t got the tools pay someone else to do it,

I knew 2 people who died trapped under their vehicles.

one was andy smith who worked for paddys patches.
The second I only knew as H, he was trapped under his lorry for an estimated three days, before he was found.

If you aint got the tools don`t do the job

if you dont want to go too far under the car then like the gents say use a bit of brick or heavywood as an extra saftey for the jack, you could try taking the sump plug off without crawling under with a longer bar, it;s usually the firsts 1/4 turn that needs the force. remember to replace the plug before filling up with new oil.I did that with the mrs' car once ,she was so appreciative that i was changing the oil (apparently a lot of men do fukkall for women)she started verbalyy rubbing me up GooD Boy aaaa pant etc...that Igave her an impromtu mini wanko mecho/techo lecture on oil changing , filled up with special polymer protection then drove the car to the front of the house to find i'd spilt twenty squids of fgking oil .dont let them interupt you with enchanting warm tea and hidden boobs of distraction ,get that plug out and in again, only then communicate with the trollopy sirens .Use first gear and handbrake on and chock the rear wheels.

just go buy yourself an oil draining tub..very shallow in hight so easy slid under your car.

no need to fuck around jacking your car up and having old oil stayin your engine cause its not flat, well the car..

I you dont mind a drive to wigan you can use my ramps or axle stands rather than risk a jack on its own, but you have to bring your own bowl lol.

To the second point yes actually, I've plans to work overseas for a bit, a car isn't something that I can take.

I faced exactly the same problem with my wife's latest car, it has a huge plastic panel obscuring the engine, and too little clearance to remove it even with the use of trolley jack + axles stands, or ramps all of which I possess.

As I don't have an inspection pit I gave up, and took the car to a man that does.
