well winter's definitely here seeing as i've started wearing more than just a t-shirt outside.
This means low sun in the morning with soaking wet roads making it impossible to see without my tinted visor. Also gets dark around 4pm which means i'm having to carry 2 visors with me and its pissing me off changing them and carrying them all the time.

can anyone recommend me some decent sunglasses that will fit under my lid and stop the god awful glare from blinding me?

You pick up loads for about £10-15 that will do the job, make sure that the arms are straight and don't bend around the back of the ear, this will make it easier to slide in and out of the lid.

the glasses will be used for driving as well which ruled out the built in visor option.
my dad has some cool sunglasses (blublockers or something) which work really well eliminating the glare. i have found there is a huge difference between decent sunglasses and crap sunglasses.

Don't get glasses with 'thick' legs when they come to the lens...

If you still do lifesavers (Rolling Eyes) then the legs restrict your view behind greatly. To the extent I'd rather squint than wear them. Feels like I am blocking too much vision with them on and really dislike riding with them on.

How much do you want to spend? If they are just going to live in an out pocket of a motorbike jacket, do they need to be any good?

What was meant by fishing glasses, was that they are designed to stop the sun dazzling your eyes off the water... same problem with the sun on wet roads. Go and look at glasses in shops, they need to fit comfortably inside your helmet so bring that with you, and then ask if they are polarized.

I'd just get some cheap ones...

But if you want to spend money Oakley are good Thumbs Up

+1

Make sure they have polarised on a sticker. Forget any that react to light changes as they DO NOT block glare.
Rmember that polarised will only block glare in one direction. So going for ones designed for fishing or such, which are designed to stop glare from something lower than your face. Compared to a std sun worshippers pair which may be designed to stop glare from above the eye line.

A good test to see how good the make is on polarised is to take 2 pairs the same and rotate one infront of the other at some point you will get a very dark view. That is the angle that they are blocking the reflections.

Another vote for oakleys. Some of their wraparound ones have a kind of "rest" built in that goes against your cheekbone and prevents them being pushed against your eyelashes in an annoying fashion.

I'd recommend the "fives".

They aren't cheap, but once you wear them, you'll realise how cheap and nasty a lot of the sunglasses out there are. Particularly with the optical quality of the lenses.

EDIT: I've had a set of 6 years now. Still fine, I keep them in the cloth bag when not on my face. Seems to be if you spend that much on sunglasses, you tend to look after them. There have been a couple of incidents where they've been squashed/sat on. They tend to just pop apart rather than break, you just snap the legs back on again or pop the lenses back in and all is well with the world.

Oakleys seem the brand to have.

I deffo need to get a pair of sunglasses, was it just me or was the glare really bad from the road today?

That'll teach me to ride into the sun.

When light from the sun hits a surface it will either be absorbed or reflected horizontally, diagonally or vertically. When the unpolarised light hits the road it is reflected aligned horizontally causes problems for us on the road, as it appears really bright. A pair of polarised glasses will have a laminate containing vertical stirpes and preventing horizontally polarised light from entering the eyes. They will also act as a normal pair of sunglasses to the low sun because natural sunlight isn't aligned, its just a mish mash of waves. Let me know if I cocked up anything above!

Well, that put my A levels to good use.

Another quite interesting test if you only have 1 pair of sunglasses is if you look at your phone screen with them and then turn it onto the side, it should either dim or black out completely if they're polarised.

Personally, I can only vouch for my Oakleys, Got a pair of M frames which go on and off fine with my helmet.

Hope this helps,

I have a set of fives too, think i've had mine about 7 years. They served me well and are still my back ups although they were getting a bit scratched looking - they have seen several festivals, lots of cycling trips, drunken summer nights and basically been on at any point when the sun was out and some when it blatantly wasnt but wearing the Oakleys made it seem like it was! Smile

I finally replaced mine this year with a new set of fives squared. Initially i didn't like them as much as the old pair but they are winning me round now. Can be got about £50. Buy some!

Ah, so that explains why the digital speedo on my Hornet appears black unless looking at it straight on Thumbs Up

Metal arms? More likely to survive the pushing between your swede and the padding on your helmet.

If your plan on riding with Polarized glasses, just keep in mind that they can make it very hard to see traffic lights at certain angles, potentially dangerous if the road has a tight curve just before a junction or crossing.

Beyond that, Oakley all the way, I use a set of square wires and they fit the bill nicely.

A mate of mine discovered that mirrored aviators are not the best sunglasses to wear under his lid, all he could see was the reflection of the road bouncing off his glasses onto the visor.

I live in the ME and have tried many brands as you need them out here, used to have oakleys but have found that they scuff up to easy and sink to quick, now hooked on ray bans as they are the longest lasting i have found and are very thin.
