no power/lack of compression - rebuild
rattly top end (worn small end bearing)/piston slap - rebuild

should be changing the rings on a rs every 10k miles max or something like that.. check workshop manual..

you can hear/feel when a 2t needs a topend rebuild.. bottom end you dont need to touch until the main bearings start to go unless the crank goes before..

Hi

Aprilia say to check the rings at 8000km (5000 miles). Only real way to do that is to strip the top end so you may as well replace them.

You can do a compression check to get a fair idea of the state of the rings.

Top end rebuild is a gentle afternoons work. Easier than doing the valves on a 4 cylinder 4 stroke.

All the best

Keith

get a set of rings and change them,
check the top and bottom ends for up and down play, while you are changing the rings,

clean out the power valves and remove all the carbon build up on the piston,

as said its a couple of hours of easy going,
or about 20mins if you know what your doing

of course its a vtwin...
that was my point, surely its just 1 cylinder of the vtwin off the 250.
like how suzuki has the rgv125 and the rgv250

Just that it would take you more than 20 minutes to get the tank off and get the bar out that braces the frame and bolts to the barrel.

The RS125 has prtty much nothing in common with the RS250.

All the best

Not to mention how damn cramped the work space is for undoing the all the bolts yay for quarter turns... also the 5 mins it took me to gently work the swiss cheese power valve out.

Took us 3 hours or there abouts to do our first top end rebuild on my rs.
