How not to pick a nicked bike

Advice please

All the bikes I've bought before have been road legal and have a V5 so you can check the frame & engine numbers and sellers address, but I now want a trials bike and suddenly realise I don't know how to check if it's been nicked.

How do you lot keep yourselves safe against this??

if its road legal trials exacly the same check log book against frame n engine numbers

It will still have a frame and engine number and if stolen this should be on the police computer

Whoooa hold up got me worried now as i sort of bought my bike from a "lookalike" chav (was a decent lad tho)

Im alright tho aint i, already had the v5 engine & frame numbers match altho the frame has been painted but no signs of being re'wrote

Sent v5 off in my name & got it back no problems?
