Transmission Problems

Calling Linux BCFers for advice.

I have been using Transmission as my bittorrent client since installing Ubuntu 9.10 amd64. I have downloaded a few very big torrents in the last week or so. At first I was getting errors regarding having 'too many files open'. A workaround was to increase the limit of open files kernel-side but this made for stability issues and silly CPU usage, so I reverted to default.

I have deleted many of the torrents I was seeding bar the Linux distributions I have been trying out to try and improve the situation. However there's a couple of torrents which don't have constant seeds which are 37.9GB and 7.7GB, the former containing hundreds of files. I will just have to sit tight until these have come in as I don't want to have to download again. Back with the default file limit and all finished torrents paused I am back to experiencing program stalls and it's hogging the shit out of my right-hand CPU core.

After my files are done, I think I will be switching programs as Transmission simply doesn't seem able to cope with torrents of many files. As Linux is an operating system renowned for its server capabilities and stability of handling of many files, I think either Transmission is to blame or I am doing something wrong.

My question to you guys is what do you use for your downloads? My thoughts so far are:

I have considered running uTorrent under Wine as I have had good experiences using this in Windows.
I have found Opera's inbuilt torrent thing is handy for emergencies but has a bit of a lack of features for my liking. I also would prefer not to clutter my downloads tab as I like to seed open source software.
I know that a couple of you have servers set up for stuff like this. This may be an idea in the future but ideally if I was to make a file server I would want to buy a new motherboard with SATA connectors to warrant buying new hard drives and possibly a better router so, financially, I think this can wait. I am open to ideas though.

limewire works ok. never really tried anything any torrents that has had hundreds of files though.

if you have a favourite windows torrent client try using Wine (Wine is not an emulator) and run your windows program in linux

Deluge. Works a treat.

uTorrent under WINE does also work quite well. If you fancied you could run XP in a VirtualBox and use uTorrent that way along with any other Windows program as WINE does indeed suck.
