Network bods - Static IP?

Router question:

Want to set static local IP for my PC and XBOX because I'm sick of changing the port-forward settings each time they get issued a new IP by the router.

Looked in some guides but they all talk about turning off DHCP and setting the IPs manually. But I want to leave DHCP on as it's useful for my laptop, work laptop mrs' iPhone and when people visit etc.

So is there a way to have DHCP on, but set a static IP for select devices?

It would appear that I can just set my IP on my computer manually to something outside the DHCP range (it's set to x.x.x.2 - x.x.x.100) So just set it to x.x.x.101? But will that even work? It seems too simple?

Last time I tried it nothing would connect (not even to the router) but maybe I did it wrong.

You should be able to assign an IP Address by MAC Address on the router. what router do you have?

You can find the MAC Address of a windows PC by opening the command prompt and typing ipconfig /all
the other devices i can't remember where the mac address is listed but i'm sure it'll be under network settings

theres no need to mess around with MACs.
you can do exactly as you mentioned in your post. if your router is assigning DHCP addresses in the range 192.168.1.2 - 192.168.1.100 then set your static IP on your PC to 192.168.1.101 and on your abox as 192.168.1.102.

job done.

You can end up with IP Address conflicts if you do that, although if you give it an IP high up the range its unlikely.
also the router might only accept connections from IP Address that have been dished out by the DHCP on the router.

Does your router have a DMZ zone on it?

I put my XBOX on the DMZ and left DHCP on for the rest of the network, works fine for me and have open NAT but is kept separate from my network.

youll only get conflicts if you assign a static IP from within the DHCP range.

Will try again with setting the IP outside the range, and if that doesn't work I'll try Chris method using the DMZ.

The other methods will work as I used that before I discovered I had a preconfigured zone... I just found it easier because its less effort.
