Possibly the cam chain tensioner - I had mine go on the bandit 4. Can't remember the exact sympoms as it was a long time ago. You should be able to pick one up for around £15 second hand off ebay.

I would suspect the clutch if the sound goes away once you set off.

Could possibly be the cam chain itself, i had a similar thing on the gs, the tensioner was at its tightest setting if you like. The chain was just stretched and had to be replaced Sad

How old is it? Could be that the person you bought it off knew it needed doing but couldn't be arsed and didn't tell you Evil or Very Mad . Did you not hear it running when you bought it?

Hope you get it sorted mate Wink

..probably been posted before, if you have a rattle and can't tell where from, get a long screwdriver or similar, place against engine and rest handle just behind your ear against your skull - the sound will travel up the screwdriver and will allow you to pinpoint the problem area.

Also seen an old boy balance a pair of carbs using a plastic pipe to listen to the induction sound of each carb!
