Race pattern help...

Hi all, I'm after changing the gearing on my 99 R1 to race pattern but with the standard setup it just wont work, The gear shift goes through the frame and thus will not move any higher. Its quite hard to explain so I have included a lovely paint drawing to illustrate.

I have a feeling its just a case of buying a new gearshift rod/connector but I can't seem to find anything. The rearsets are harris fully adjustable if that makes any difference.

Are you sure you cant extend the rod and turn the arm slightly just to reverse its turning, i know your saying you cant find the parts and i would imagine its because the method i've said is used bar extending the foot rest past the frame and the selector arm by means of welding tabs.
Seems weird i'm looking at a picture now and i'm sure it can be done.
If you can maybe put the rearsets on the highest posistion?

Bending the current rod so it actuates the other side of the spline may work.
In other cases I've seen people running a rod outside of the frame.

This is genuinly bugging me now, i'm sure i've seen race bikes with the rod still through the frame but with that said i think i saw a quickshift set up running outside the frame.

You can buy rods specifically designed for 'race shift' for a variety of popular models that go through the frame.

I have had a look and nope, there is no room to do that, it just hits the top of the frame. Rearsets are in the highest position already Neutral

G, got any links for those "race shift" bars?

Not off the top of my head - may not have been available for your specific model, but have seen them on some bikes.

Beat me too it, i was going to suggest getting something machined up the is basically a setup like the woodcraft one.

some rearsets ive seen have 2 rods.

failing that, just angle grind the hole bigger.

As you suspected, you DO need a new rod. When you get Harris new, you actually get a few rods with it as you even need to change it depending on how 'aggressive' you have the peg position (IIRC).

Contact Harris, they will supply you the correct one! Thumbs Up

Then stick the race shift one on eBay and probably get twice as much as you paid for the normal shift one, purely coz it has 'race' in the description and people won't look up how much they cost from Harris!! Laughing

Thanks mate, ill give them a bell today. I bought the bike with the rearsets already on so didnt have the luxury of choosing gear rods etc...
