I tried doing a quick search but could not find an answer to my question,I invested in a trickle charger yesterday for my nsr.I just wanted to clarify whether or not I should disconnect the battery from the bike incase of damage to the alternator? The charger has a feature where it will charge the battery to 13.5v then discharge it to 13v and start charging again to guard against overcharging if that helps. Thanks

Yep, disconnect the battery from the bike before charging. Never actually tried charging one still connected, but I would imagine it's not advisable.

Optimates and the such charge on the bike, if your charger is voltage sensitive (not just going to boil the battery to oblivion), so can't see it doing any harm.

+1, just charge it on the bike all bike electrics will be off anyhow with the key turned off.

I can kind of understand why you would say this but if you think about it what are the fuses for?

To protect components that's what! And if a fuse was in danger of blowing then I'd rather have it there to protect my bike than not there! If you mean remove the fuse to take away the situation of electricity reaching components in the first place then I would hope a turned off ignition would do that anyway.

The Optimate Trickle Charger I bought came with a few sets of leads, one of which was a set that you can connect to the battery and leave on there, you just tuck them under the seat, they are for leaving the bike on trickle charge overnight if you so wish whilst it's parked in your garage without the hassle of taking the battery off all the time...

I've used it many a time on the three bikes I've owned to no ill effect... Thumbs Up

Thanks for the replies everyone,I put it on overnight whilst still on the bike and it seems ok. The only reason I did not want to disconnect the battery was in case my immobiliser did not like it as I'm not sure how to reset it etc but not a problem now,thanks all.
