PostPosted: 22:02 - 29 Jan 2010    Post subject: Two Week Trip To Europe - Where to go and everything else! Reply with quote

Hello,

I've got an idea which will hopefully become a reality if everything goes well. I would like to tour Europe with my Girlfriend for 2 weeks in April. I briefly discussed it with my Mum and she said she and my step-dad would probably like to come as well. We could always split up and meet back up.

I want to start planning this just now, hoping that we can go ahead with it! Just want to find out how much money I'm going to be needing (each) and suggested places to visit in the 2 weeks.

I know two weeks isn't a lot of time and to add to it we wouldn't like to be going place to place to place, without seeing much of it.

Thanks,
Steven

2 weeks will give you 16/17 days including weekends. You can certainly enjoy a good tour in that time.

I would say skip the most common destinations i.e France, Italy. You've probably seen them before on school trips or package holidays, and they're expensive. They don't really change will be perfect when you're more pressed for time or have more cash to spend or an idea of where you want to go.

Take yourself slightly out of your comfort zone and make a beeline for Eastern Europe.

As to where exactly, that all depends on funds and what you want. Do you just want to be in cities or at some point do you want to visit a beach, swim in the sea or a lake?

How experienced are you and your dad? How long has your girl been pillion?

Hi - thanks for the info.

Would probably be looking at 15 days max if possible, with a day or 2 to spare just in case! I've been to France once before but never Itally and it's somewhere I would really like to see.

I'm going to be complicated and say both cities and beaches. I like my photography so would definitely like to see some major attractions.

As for experience... I only have my CBT and haven't ridden in a couple of months (I had to sell my bike). I plan on doing my DAS and using my brothers CBR 600 for the trip (if it goes ahead). My Girlfriend has unfortunately never been pillion. My step dad has plenty of experience and has a Honda Super Blackbird.

There are loads of write-ups on Europe, but if you want to go to Italy, what about the lakes - Garda is lovely, great road running all the way round it and some lovely little outdoor cafes. I believe lake Como is also worth a visit although never went there myself last year (excuse for another trip:) ). The pass from Italy to France is a great road with loads of hairpins and it takes you through lots of ski resorts (most of them will be empty though as they are only in use in the ski season).
Black Forest in Germany has some good roads and if you want cities then Cologne is lovely, you can sit on the pathway next to Rhine and watch the world go by, very relaxing.

I've heard that Lake Garda is lovely - my parents have been before. I would love to visit Cologne as well, looks like a lovely city! I'm going to have a proper think about this over the next few days and see if it's do-able.

How much (roughly) of course, do you think would be needed in total? We would plan on mostly camping but maybe the odd night in a hotel. Chances are it would be in a CBR 600f.

I went to Como in 2008 on my tour and planned to spend a lovely weekend there. However, I was so disappointed when I got there and wished I went to Garda instead. Ended up in Milan for a couple of days instead and had a great time...

I think my trip lasted around 2 weeks so check the link in my sig for a few ideas? Very Happy

Steve & I got the ferry at 2.30am on the Saturday morning, arrived back in Calais about 2.30 Sunday afternoon 2 weeks later and went to Brussels, down through Black Forest, into Austria, Slovenia (2 nights), Lake Garda (2 nights), France, Luxembourg, Mons, Belgium (2 nights), did almost 3500 miles and never really felt too pushed.
We had 3 nights in a hotel, the rest camping, cost us about ?800 each for the holiday including fuel and an expensive hotel at Lake Bled, Slovenia (it was a birthday present for Steve).

I read through your write up and it was great too! I'm really excited about this, but like I say it's still in planning and is only an idea at the moment!

I've never done anything like this before and would like to know what equipment and gear I would need to take with me, I'm guessing:

Panniers - can anyone recommend something cheap?
Tent - Mats and Sleeping bags
Cooking Stove
Cloths
Passport and Driving Licence
Money
Map and or SatNav

Anything else?

I have a tent but would probably get a new one - something easier and quicker to put up. Main thing is something to store all this, would need a set of panniers to hold the gear but have no idea what to look at, looking to spend as little as possible really.

France/Germany and most of Eastern Europe are very boring places to tour.

Head for Italy or Spain, great weather/roads and people. Thumbs Up

Barcalona has it all, A City, Beaches, and many things to visit, Beatiful place.

Plus you could ride across the pyranese, Take the N260/N260 Between Pamplona/Andorra for excellent roads.

Barcelona is amazing. I could only imagine how good it would be to ride a bike through the city.

Interesting, totally disagree though. What do you classify as Eastern Europe exactly, anything East of Germany/Austria and Italy? Slovenia, Croatia? If so I doubly disagree, while i've not been up to Poland or the Baltics I do plan to and gather there is plenty to see if you know where to go, riding aimlessly with no research can mean you potentially miss everything, a lot of people stick to main roads too. Ride up through England on the A1....fun and sights you will not have.

How anyone can say southern France is very boring to tour though is beyond me, do you tell people not to bother with the Alps if they want to see mountains?

you will need registration document for vehicle and depending on what countries you are going to you will need first aid kit, hi vis jacket, spare bulbs.

For riding, I found Swiss alpine roads to be excellent ? and the St Bernard pass doubly so.
The cheese is pretty good too!
At Bern I set the sat nav to ?Martigny? via the shortest rather than the quickest route.
I was a bit disapointed by Italian costal roads, but nice views.
I can second Barcelona ? a bit of everything for everyone.

I went further down Spain, ending up at Granada ? has plenty of historic stuff in the town centre, seemed to be decent night life at night and the (the original) Sierra Nevada mountains next door which have some pretty good roads and great views.

-try M&P for some ?35 buffalo ones. Cheap and cheerful and expandable to 50l. Used them on a tour lasting over a month with no worries.

Tent - Mats and Sleeping bags -
Get the best tend you can afford. I learned the hard way on my firs tour when my ?30 tunnel tent broke on the first night. I now have an Aztec Esquina semi geodesic tent and have never looked back.
You bag should reflect the temps you'll be staying in. I bought a Vango 50 for ?25, its good for temps around the low teens. i.e Europe in the summer at night.

Cooking Stove -
don't bother for just two weeks, not if you'll be visiting cities anyway.
Cloths -
Less is more. A few T Shirts, some linen trousers, one warm top, one smart outfit, a few socks and pants, swim wear, and something to wear on your feet.

Passport and Driving Licence
3 copies of all your important documentation - Not really that important for the EU but do it anyway. Take passport photos too.

Money
ATMs you'll get a much better exchange rate. Check to make sure your bank isn't a crook. Nationwide are great for spending in the EU, Abbey and A&L are down right criminal in terms of their charges.

Map and or SatNav
Both. Sat Nav for ease and city riding, maps for planing longer routes. I se my mobile phone for satnav and bout a Michelin European atlas.

You need the originals of your license, insurance, MOT and tax. If you get asked for your documents then copies aren't acceptable, they'll want to see the originals.

you should take them. Just like you should be able to produce your documents on demand in the UK. Take your choice.

Its easy to take them along with 3 photocopies.

Last year i didn't bother since i'd lost my license in a bar a couple of days before.

Regarding clothes, everyone takes too many...

For my next tour, I'm taking 3 t-shirts for riding [wearing one, one dirty and one clean], it's more than enough [same for underwear also!].

Maybe 1 or 2 smarter tops for night time [especially if visiting cities] and a pair of trousers that can be worn at night and of a day when exploring. Last time I took a pair of outdoor hiking style trousers, brilliant of a day and smart enough to be worn at night around Europe. And of course a pair of smartish trainers, again both for day and night wear.

It doesn't sound like a lot, but any more really isn't necessary... Very Happy

Thanks for your input everyone! I think the europe tour has been put on hold for the moment - hopefully in the summer. We've decided to try and do 1 week in Scotland first, I'll hopefully be using my brothers CBR 600 if all goes well with my DAS etc... Would a CBR 600 manage 2 up and with luggage?

c-m thank you so much for your comment, you've been a great help! I couldn't find the ?35 panniers you were taking about but found these ones on ebay https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BUFFALO-GETAWAY-LUGGAGE-EXPANDING-MOTORCYCLE-PANNIERS_W0QQitemZ190369099869QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Motorcycle_Parts?hash=item2c52e1f05d ?15 more expensive though!

Last time I looked Abbey and A&L are now part of Santander.
I dunno all the details about using Abbey and A&L debit cards in ATM`s but previously charges where based on per transaction (with a min fee) of about ?2 so withdrawing 10 euros or 200 euros incured a similar fee.
The new santander Zero credit card can be used to withdraw cash from ATM`s without incuring any charges so long as you repay in full later when the bill lands on your door mat.
AFAIK nationwide have recently changed their policy on free cash withdrawls, so I`d double check in case they now do charge for ATM withdrawls
