hello chip and welcome,
my advice would be if you're old enough to do the DAS do it,
you can use the training school big bikes to practice on and take your tests on , then if you pass sell the 125 and get something bigger.
If you don't use a training school and aim to do it all on your own you will have no choice except use your 125, because test centres don't supply bikes and you could not legaly ride a 500 with L plates to the centre.

restricting a bike makes no difference to the insurance cost, they charge you as if it was standard. |
Codswallop.
Some companies do and have done. You have to claim it as a "modification" and I remember it put someones price up by around 300 quid.
As for insurance prices? Well I've never paid more than 500 quid a year TPF&T and that was on a Hornet 600 with 1 years NCB and being 18...
I assume you've driven cars before? Any car NCB? As a few companies will do like for like now unlike before so you can transfer the NCB to use on bike insurance
There's a website, the bike insurer that will check different sites. Just do a mock up of a bike you'd like. a 600 anything. Cbr, R6, gsxr, Hornet, Bandit, Fazer, Sv650. Anything. A bike you like and do a mock up test.
And if you do the DAS, as far as I'm aware most companies will hire the bike (as part of the price package) during training and the test itself so no need to sell the bike. At least that's what it was like when I took my test 3 years ago... I'm pretty sure it's still the same.
Don't sell your bike, look around for companies that do provide bikes.
Also, the test for the restricted is the same as DAS. Just on a smaller bike.
Just do a bit of searching and it should be all good

Insuring your own bike for the test won't be cheap. The cost of renting a van and insuring your own bike will be more expensive than hiring one from the training school.
And I don't think your test being the first time riding your bike is a good idea, you'll have a better chance of passing if you use one of the training school bikes that you're used to.
Don't go for the restricted license because you will regret it. People only do the restricted license because they're not old enough to do DAS.
Oh yeah, if you get a restricted license then there will also be the expense of restricting your bikes, about ?150-200 from a dealer if you get an FI International kit, or cheaper if you can find somewhere that will restrict your bike without an FI International kit.
Restricted isn't the easiest route in the long term view as it will work out to be more expensive and more hassle. Go to a training school and do your DAS. |

I always wonder why people ask for advice, it is given to them (in a clear cut way) yet ignore it and do what they were doing to do in the first place!
The money you will pay on having the bike restricted and what you have to pay more in insurance will probably be MORE than just going for the DAS! Use their bikes. It'll be cheaper and less to worry about. ____________________ '99 Hornet 600 , VFR 400 NC30 '92 , Kasawamasaki GT 550 , '98 Hornet 600

Sorry, chap - have to correct you there. The GHOSAY WICBY bunch like me go for the restricted a2 because we worry about taking the test on a big bike with our osteoporosis and colostomy bags.
I only took my test because I had a few days with nowt to do so bagged a cancellation theory test, then a cancellation module 1 & then a cancellation module 2 (all on my 125). I would have been happy to keep commuting on my ikkle Varadero 125. As it happens I then spotted an already restricted Fazer and thought "why not??". 33bhp is still a lovely revelation compared to 15 (which is what a varadero has) but having binned the Fazer before xmas and only recently getting the cast off I'm in no desperate rush for the "missing" 62 bhp. ____________________ TRX850, TDM900, ST1300, CB650SC Nighthawk, ragtop Saab, gym membership, messy divorce, large chested blonde fiance
