So the eBay sat nav got my thinking, I really could do with one! A car one that I could somehow mount on my bike would be ideal.

There's loads out there, TomTom, Navman, Garmin but I wouldn't know what to go for. Map update is a must, and the ability to add a Europe map at some point might be handy! Other than that, something relatively easy to use with good maps!

Thanks in advance,
Steven

I use a Garmin Nuvi 360 for work as they're the most reliable and user friendly sat navs i've used. I don't see any reason why you couldn't build a waterproof enclosure for use on the bike, probably won't look all that pretty though. You could put it in a tankbag with a waterproof satnav pocket I suppose.

Maps are easy to get and update as the internal memory is pretty big, I just updated mine with the entire European mapping at about 1gb (knocked off a handful of countries i'd not need). I was going to take mine last year but hadn't figured out how to update it unofficially by the time I was ready to go, will no doubt take it next time for the added use of having camping POIs for every country.

Alternatively, if you have an iPhone or other smartphone with GPS you could get an app for it that does the same job and saves you carrying another device.

Use your phone for GPS and then get a waterproof case and mount for your bike like: Motorcycle Mobile Phone Waterproof Case

It is the cheapest option, you can get a cheap car mount for your phone and you have a GPS solution you can use on your bike and in the car.
