Ive been having a small problem with mybike lately. Its blown 3 tail light bulbs now in the past 2 weeks. Not that its expensive but its better to correct the problem than leave it and ride with no lights at night and crash.

I use double winding bulb and one of the winding which is the tail light keeps going. The brake light still works. I suspect that might be caused by the vibration but im not sure. Whatcha think?

The bike is a Gilera Cougar 125.

Does the tail light (and head light...) only come on when the engine is running?

Make sure all the bolts holding the fairings on are secure - i had a problem not long ago when the rear mud guard was a bit loose and vibrating causing my bulbs to blow.

also make sure you dont touch the glass part of the bulb as you leave a residue or something on the glass that can cause them to get too hot and blow out or something.

make sure the tail light bulb is the correct voltage & amperage for your bike. if the bulbs are the right ones then you have a short somewhere, check the connections inside the bulb holder & the wires going into the back of it. look for any exposed or worn insulation on the wiring where a live wire might be earthing.

That applies to halogen bulbs.

OP, get some bulbs from a different shop, my 500's blow some makes of bulb, but not others (very juddery bikes, cheap bulbs fail easily from the vibrations)

Could also be an intermittent wiring fault. Check all of the associated wiring for sections that are rubbed through and grounding on the frame/other wires.

Just buy a LED bulb, stick it in and never ever look at it or think about it again. Razz

Halfords do them in packs of 2 iirc.
