Some of you may remember that my 1939 Ariel Trials 350 got stolen and torched back in April. I stripped her down at half term and took some pictures.

Well I have had various bits of work done, frame and forks powder coated, new tank, new seat etc and I started to nail her back together today.

It's cool that you're putting it back together. Are you doing it in a science class-room? Shocked

It's clearly a DT classroom, note the wood lathe in the background, and the vacuum.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

Now that I look at it, there are a lot of vices on the back desks too... Laughing Nevertheless, the dude's building a bike in a school. Very strange. Razz

Not that strange a place as I work there. I could work from home but at school I am not being disturbed all day.
Day Two
Clutch and primary drive assembled and a lot of other bits sorted and ready to fit such as the carb, mag, cylinder head. Progress does not look much ATM but things will go in leaps and bounds tomorrow. The photo of the brown item is in fact the carb float, it has become unsoldered with the heat of the fire.

Day 3
finished the head (one of the valves has damaged and needed refacing in the lathe) fitted the piston, barrel and head. Made sure the mag was throwing a spark and bolted it on, sorted the ignition timing out. Bolted the head down and gapped the inlet valve to 0.001" then failed to find exhaust rocker box Sad ( turned up at home in the ferret room, I had robbed bits off it for the Badger Smile ).
Spent ages cleaning the remains of my burnt out seat from the oil tank and sprayed it up to fit in the morning. It should be rolling on its own wheels by tomorrow night.

Quality engineering at its finest! The progress is startling too. Love the separate gearbox.

Sorta tempts me to try some sort of classic, there was a classic small capacity 2 stroke Ducati race bike for sale near me. I'd love something like that, something different to tinker with.

Cool bike.

Cheers, go for the little racer, I would love a baby Duc, once you build it you could sprint her.

I reckon your bikes are the coolest on here. I'm your (not so) secret admirer Smile.

I always took the DT rooms for granted, I'd kill (a ferret) for somewhere like that to work on stuff now Sad.

It was £2.5k Sad And beautifully restored already. The owner was even greasy and had an italian accent.

It was perfect, just not right for me. I need one for £500 that's been found in a barn.

I was just wondering to myself "But don't the kids mess with it when they're in lessons...?" untill I realised it's the summer holidays! I always wondered if there was anyone in school in the summer holidays when I was a kid.

Looks like you're making great progress aswell but then I bet you have a lot of spare time on your hands for a few weeks right? Laughing

*Isn't jealous of all the holidays teachers get in the slightest. Honest.*

Day 4
Finished off the engine and bolted on the magneto chain cover. Fitted the newly painted oil tank and plumbed in the oil system.
Took her off the bench and onto trestles and fitted the wheels.
Got carried away a bit and bolted lots of bits on Very Happy
I think I will be test riding her by lunch tomorrow and MOT on Monday.

Brilliant stuff Wal, I'm so glad you did decide to rebuild her in the end- she's already looking lovely. Must be really nice for you to see it coming back together again after the pain of having to recover it after it was torched.

Day 5

Failed in my attempt at a five day rebuild Sad , I will need a couple of hours on Monday to finish her off.
Fitting the mudguards was a pain (it always is) I shortened the rear one by four inches to give her a better line and put a nicer hinge in ( the rear section swings up to remove the wheel). None of my nice new cables actual fitted so I had to fiddle about un-soldering nipples and adjusting them, it is the little jobs that take up all the time.
The more observant amongst you may notice a lack of lights, she is not having any Mr. Green She will be road legal with a daytime MOT but I fancy a go at pre-65 trials ( I am very bad at trials). She will get booked in for a MOT on Monday and I am rallying her on Friday.

You've done really well. If you like repairing fire burnt bikes theres a BMW 600cc by the field near mine.

I never want to work on a torched bike again. scraping and burning off chared plastic and soot not only stinks, it has permiated my hands and they will not come clean and my face looks like this after a few hours....
