Hi all

I was hoping what ideas you might think I have with this problem.

Its a Honda H100S2 model (2T smoker)

Symptoms: It will start, run for about 5 secs then die!

Solutions so far:

It had a new plug, the spark is strong and it did the same thing on the old and new plug so I have ruled that out!

Starting requires a lot of choke and i might get a brief run, then choke in, runs as normal then dies!

What is the problem I'm not sure but I'm guessing the carb needs a strip down and clean?

Thing is it has ran great for the last 6 months after coming out of storage for 12 years!!!

Any pointers? And just so you know its not a points ignition system! CDI cheers in advance for any help! Crying or Very sad

sounds just like me at the gym Laughing

is the baffle blocked?

also id check for air leaks but im thinking crank case seals are worn.

thats why it runs with choke and dies when choke off as mixture is too lean with the extra air leaking past the crank seals.

I'll try the baffle.

Not too sure on the crank case seals to be causing that, surely?

Its not like the Suzuki GPs where the carb is sucking in from the side of the engine through a rotary valve.

This uses a reed block system and mounts as normally where you would most likely find a carb

My dad had a H100 years ago, would barely run. Turned out the exhaust was completely blocked. I diagnosed it by unscrewing the exhaust header. Made loads of noise and had loads of go. I de-coked the exhaust after that to fix it.

I think your problem is fuel starvation. Turn the tap off and take the fuel hose off the carb. Turn the tap on again and check the flow. If it drips or dribbles slowly you have a blocked tap (can't remember if they have an internal filter). If it runs nicely I'd check the carb out.

Well after several kicks, it doesn't start now and smells very heavy of petrol, you can actually sniff it coming out the exhaust, therefore i'm pretty much flooding it I think.

My brother uses the bike and rides to college which is less than a mile away - i know, laziness!

Has the carb been off?

Check the condition of the needle, seat, float and check the adjustment of the float height.

Timing is probably not an issue on electronic ignition so almost certainly flooding or some other fueling issue.

carb hasn;t been off, thats my next job to do. I bought my self an ultrasonic cleaner to see what its capable of.

Also i'm thinking the reeds can play a vital part in the engine running correctly? Can a broken or stuck reeds cause this symptom?

Will hopefully find out more tomorrow as I'll swap the carb and reeds from a donar bike that i know that works

Right guys

I have spent all evening on the bike with no luck!

Checked the reeds, which were ok, and swaped the carb from my donar bike. I know the carb from the donar is ok, as the bike was put away for restoration/doing up and was running fine since then.

I did manage to get it going but only for 10 secs and on full throttle - it ran really erractic then died, so i'm thinking its more of an ignition issue?

help! i'm looking at the haynes manual and i'm so baffled, spark is good and i'm out of options.

Can the ignition fire the plugs erraticly and what would the solutions be?

cheers

i had a similar problem with my h100sj tracked it down to a dodgy ignition switch. it was shorting the cdi unit to earth ind killing the spark.
when kicked over to check the spark it looked as if the spark was ok but the spark died before the engine stopped turning over.

if you put a meter across the green and the black with white striped wire from the ignition switch it should be a dead short with the switch off ond open circuit with it on.
on mine it was down to about 200 ohms with the switch on and was enough to let it fire but not enough to let it run.

i hope this helps i was pulling my hair out with this and stripped the carb and other bits more times than i would like to think about.

good luck

Thanks for this tip mate, I will look into that as the ignition switch is playing up! I have to fiddle with it just to get the indicators, rear brake light and horn to work etc

glad it helped.

the symptoms I had were so confusing I checked so much and done so much cleaning changed the cdi unit and the coil, some times it would go a bit better and you think you are getting somewhere then it just laughs at you and your back to the start.

now just get the switch on and enjoy the bike

jamie.
