Spotted this thing in the local bike breakers and at £200 tax and tested it seemed like a worth while investment or something to play around with at least. Once i figured out that the fuel tap was off she fired up with a few kicks, the little twin cylinder two stroke motor made a fantastic little popping sound which made me smile like a little Japanese school girl.

Given my previous track record with bikes i decided it would be a good purchase, at least if i messed something up it would be cheap to replace, i also had never worked on a two stroke before so it is a nice change.

My plan is to eventually turn it into a cafe racer style bike. Single seat race unit, mid 70's flat tank, clip ons etc.

First things first, stripped and cleaned the "carb", repaired the many airleaks and cracks within the airhoses. Fixed one of the oil lines to the second cylinder which was held on with jb weld, gave the battery a quick charge which to my surprise it held quite nicely, started sanding down the tank and side panels, during sanding i found that half the tank had be repaired with body filler, since i was using an angle grinder with a sanding wheel it had already made its way deep into the filler so that needed to be re done aswell.

Hopefully i will get most of this done within the week. Im still waiting on the single seat unit and seat foam i ordered aswell as the early 70's cafe racer style nose fairing which should give it that retro cafe racer look. Similar to the one below, i think that one is off an early RD, i believe the one i ordered is based off an early TZR which has an even curvier old school look.

Thats pretty much it for now. Im still waiting on the part to be delivered, apart from that she's in pretty good knick and just needs cosmetic work done.

Its certainly not bad. From my experience i've bought far worse for far more. I guess there not really sort after bikes being just over the legal limit for learners and pretty small for riders with full licences. Spares are also incredibly cheap and available since it shares almost everything from the Early RD 200's.

Theres a more angular coffin style tank from an RD200 in my garden, I'm sure you can have that if it's more fitting. Try to get some self etching primer to go over the bare metal bits, normal cheap stuff will flake off as soon as your legs rub it.

That sound fantastic, i've been after an RD200 tank as they do that the squared off look which is what im after.

Since i've now messed up this tank i might take you up on that.

Update:

Had a look around the breakers for some clip ons but could not find anything of the right fork diameter. I managed to find some off of an NSR 125 but unfortunately they were made of alloy and seemed to have a raised edge which just looked wrong.

I came across some old "Ace" style bars which seemed like they would give it the same riding position as clipons so i gave those a try.

After a quick sand and repaint.

Also received the cafe racer style seat unit, unfortunately much smaller then i thought it would be, so it will need to be fibre glassed to extend it a few inchs.

Progress so far.

Sweet, cheers for that. Looks alright, managed to get the random keys and rust out of the inside. Hopefully it will fit onto the frame with no modification.

Finished making the brackets for the seat today. Also got the racing foam cut out and sanded.

Seat now fully locks down and can be opened with the key.

Not much left to do now, maybe get the RD tank on there.

Also got a set of cheap led lights for the back which seem to go well with the bike even though there cheap and chavy.

Started sanding down the coffin style tank from the rd 200.

https://bikechatforums.com/files/06062010150.jpg

The tank was slightly to long so i had to grind off the mounting bracket and relocate it further down the frame.

https://bikechatforums.com/files/06062010149.jpg

Re welded the bracket into the right place, giving the new tank the correct spacing.

Starting to prime the tank, added the fuel tap etc.
