Hi, my '99 Bandit won't start after sitting for a while (turns over, but won't start). Someone mentioned that it could have water in the carbs and there is a drain hose under the engine to remove water - any idea where this is located?? I've looked in the Haynes manual but it's not much help!

Any ideas will be much appreciated!

Hi

Each carb float bowl will have a drain screw on the bottom, pointing sideways.

However I would expect it to start and idle with a bit of water (but probably die when you open the throttle).

All the best

Keith

Thanks Keith, I'll give it a try and hope that sorts it - but like you say, it may not be the problem!

Draining the carbs didn't help - I checked the plugs and there is no spark on any of them, so the problem seems to be electrical.

I've charged the battery and checked the cables and connections, but nothing seems obviously worn.

Any ideas what the culprit could be? CDI? Coils?

Cheers

Was there only petrol in the carbs when you drained them? I had this problem and you can see the layer of water at the bottom if you drain into a clear glass. In which case you should drain the tank aswell as there is probably water in there.

It was just petrol - but as the plugs are not sparking I suspect the carb problem was irrelevant anyway!

Ah gotcha! Sorry didnt see that bit. Might be worth trying new plugs, but if all 4 are gone it probably is something else. Unfortunatley electrics is my downfall!

Hi

No spark could be down to several things. Wrecked plugs (possible but unlikely all 4 would be shot at once), faulty coils (again not that likely both would be gone at once), faulty crankshaft pickup, faulty wiring, faulty cdi unit.

When you are cranking the engine over, do the revs register on the rev counter? If so that would suggest that the cdi unit is getting a signal.

All the best

Keith

The rev counter jumps around a bit when I turn the engine over so I guess that means the CDI is ok?

Hi

Suggests it is getting a signal, but would expect it to give a sensible (low) reading rather than jump around.

There are various things that will prevent a spark. Ignition switch, kill switch and (most likely) sidestand switch / clutch switch / neutral switch (ie, a combination of those will kill the ignition to stop you riding off with the stand down).

All the best

Keith

But the ignition, kill switch and sidestand switch all prevent the engine turning over don't they? Does the fact it turns over not rule those 3 out?

Hi

Looking at the wiring diagram, probably Laughing . It is one that is well worth checking though.

All the best

Hi

Think it just needs a circuit to work. Hence just conencting the wires to the sidestand switch should get it to work.

All the best

All sorted now - there was a loose connection near the ignition barrel. Probably got pulled out from moving the steering too much!

Cheers for the help
