Evening,

Wanting to replace a few parts on the car but i'm confronted by these weird looking clips. Quite annoying too as i'm guessing they're not reusable. So, how do i get the buggers off?

they dont tend to use them anymore for ''safety reasons'' which i think is bullshit.

anyway, the only way is to cut them off. i suppose mole grips would work if you just wiggled it till it fatigued and snapped (everyone has a set of them, but its not ideal)

either way, you'll want to be replacing the pipe afterwards if its a vital one.

What makes you think that? I don't think you can get them for DIY but I see hundreds of them being used on new engines each day.

I use a screw driver to expand them or cut off the smaller ones with wire cutters.

Cheers guys, it's for a vacuum hose. The actual clips are much smaller then the one in the photo so i'll give the above methods a go.

''safety reasons'' being sharp edges or some shit like that.
the MOD and all contracting companies associated with dont use them for this reason.

so you'd cut it, then de-burr it before you removed it? doubt it.

thats like saying ''here, have this knife. but instead of a sheath, have a file so you can blunt it and sharpen it as you use it''.

makes sense

to you

You don't have to cut it, you can expand/splay it out with a screw driver or somet pliers, no sharp edges then.

I assumed you were referring to the sharp edges on the diameter of the clip, de-burr that and you have no sharp edges.

So yes, makes sense to me. Go back to slowly making inferior products on an m300 lathe Razz

I usually get the tag end of them in a set of end cutters, grip tight and twist.

I crimp the new ones on with a blunted set of end cutters. Which is essentially what the proper crimping tool is.

I've put on and removed many hundreds of those things when I had a holiday job installing oxygenation systems on fish farms.

The one you have there is called a "single ear pinch clamp". You also get "Double ear clamp" ones which have a crimp at either side and are a bit more secure (but harder to get at both sides of in a tight spot).
