I got the zx7r in december, it was clearly a summer toy before me as the original downpipes were spotless, they are known to rust rotten at the hint of rain. Over winter I regulary took the calipers off, pads out and gave them a clean with a tooth brush and brake cleaner just so you know i didnt completely neglect them.
I decided my front and rear brakes on my zx7r needed an overhaul, they felt spongy and the brakes were quite frankly shit.
so..... Rebuild time, and got some hel braided lines at the same time.
Here are some photos of the front calipers (left the rear caliper pics on pc at uni but they were in a similar condition)

As you can see, road salt and dust had gotten behind the seals and pushed them outwards into the pistons, hence why some of the seals were bulging out with the piston in use
Gave them a clean, then used red rubber grease in the seal grooves, refitted the brake seals, need to order some dust seals, only 2 out of 12 were salvable so i may as well order complete set

I did remove the bits of dirt in the top pot btw!

Refitted it all together, fitted braided lines, job done, the brakes work now, and are much stiffer at the lever!

I did mine at the weekend, they were dragging quite badly every few days which required a quick strip and clean as far as i could get without removing the retaining pins as they were f*cked. Finally got them out Saturday, a complete strip and clean, new pads, new fluid and bleed. Sorted! |
